Pads with best calf protection
« on: January 31, 2024, 08:13:21 PM »

Hi, which pads on the market have the best protection round the side of the calves (widest wings +/- wraparound)?

I need to look for this as have…ahem large calf muscles. I’ve found GN and more recently Newbery to be decent sized and offer protection. Ideally go somewhere and try on but appreciate not always that straightforward

Ah, the "Tendulkar" pads. or should we now say the Jaiswal pads. I've never seen these in person, but looking on the forum, they seem to be among the lightest pads, if not the lightest. Obviously good enough protection for the pros at the highest levels - what gives them their strength at such a light weight? Does it have some kind of air chamber inside? Also, are 2 straps more or less comfortable than 3 straps like more traditional pads? Should more maufacturers be using 2 strap pads (a la wicket keeper pads)?

I couldn’t get on with the Morrant Ultralites, even in small men’s were bulky on me.

Interesting to hear that the Morrant pads seemed bulky, generally these moulded pads seem to contain less material.

Overall, how is the calf side protection compared to traditional winged cane/HDF foam pads (assuming the higher end pads offer more coverage of the side of the calf)? Do these moulded pads offer greater around protection?  And what about the front impact protection vs rebound (bat-pad catches at extra cover/mid wicket??)

From what I've seen (admittedly just from online pics), the SS/TON pads seem to have very wide wings, prob the widest I've seen - anyone with a pair to prove/disprove this? Any others with wider wings?
