I was thinking to myself today. There is no doubt that bats have improved over the last decade. There are innovative ideas being continuously introduced in an effort to hit the ball further, eg Uzi, Mongoose amongst others. No ground is too big any more.

I also think that the number of bat breakages have also increased. (Im talking televised cricket here so obviously a high standard). Is there a link between the two. Another bat breakage yesterday in the IPL.

I think as the quality of the willow/bats rises the life expectancy of them goes down...bigger profile bats which weigh the same as a smaller looking older bats are made from lighter/drier clefts which leads to them being more subseptable to breaking due to brittleness. They may hit the ball further due to better performance but last half the amount of time as well....Im sure as a paid pro though you arent too worried about this as your kit is issued FOC anyway.

Or at least thats my view on it but then im sure the experts/batmakers will give their views too!

Bats are actually better made and they not only perform better but last longer too, the quality of the balls has dropped and that is having a negative effect on the bats. But I see less breakages each year.

I think same amount of bats will break if rubbish quality of balls are used. There are some very poor quality balls being sold. Best way to  check the quality of the ball, cut into 2 halves and see how many cork/wool layers are inside

Can someone keep a count of the bat breakages in IPL.

I have read stories which most likely are true that WG Grace use to let people knock in his bats for a season before he took charge of them.

Cant see that happening anymore.

Re Breakages - is this due to over drying the willow to get larger profiles.
