Sweep and reverse sweep shots
« on: October 17, 2024, 08:40:44 AM »

Have these two become some of the most important shots in modern cricket (along with ramps and switch hits) with the dominance of T20 mindsets in almost all formats of the professional game?

As someone who tends to play more straight rather than square of the wicket when batting, I feel I need to work on these two in particular, especially as I've never found the sweep easy to play (prob partly because grew up without using helmets, but do use them now). Any tips/suggestions how best to think about using the sweep shots, and how to improve technique for both sweep and reverse sweeps? Think I'll be trying to use the winter to work particularly on these shots.

I watched a great video from Eion Morgan (I think) on the reverse sweep… the main takeaway for me was that you need to start it with the bat high up and come down onto the ball. Not sure why it made such a difference but it really did, I’m pretty confident playing it against offies who bowl with a degree of consistency length-wise now.

As far as the normal sweep goes, having got out several times lbw and caught playing it off straight balls, I’ll only sweep off leg stump or outside now. There’s definitely an adage with some club umpires that if you miss a sweep you’re out, so always a touch of caution needed.

A great one for working on during winter nets, can be good fun as your team mates adjust to the predictable reverse sweep pretty quickly 😬

Thanks @Matty59 that's very helpful, all tips gratefully received! Good to hear what worked for you, as there are lots of technical videos out there, but it's the little things that often make the biggest differences.

Hopefully with nets starting in the next couple of months, will be able to work on these shots.

I like to play straighter too, but have found sweeping to be really effective to stop the bowler getting on top. Although I'm not good enough to do it for every ball on off or middle, it's worked well for me for anything on leg or going down.

But what gave me the confidence to do it more was an entire net session last winter on nothing but sweeps and reverse sweeps. We rotated around different nets, practising different aspects. Sometimes throw downs, sometimes bowling machine, sometimes just bowlers. The best for me was the one just doing reverse sweeps - I'm old enough to remember when this shot was guaranteed to get you nothing but abuse from your own team mates, let alone the opposition! But now it's a really effective and common shot, and watching the juniors that have grown up with it (and a lot of other shots I don't have) is just great. I got pretty good by the end of the session, but still can't bring myself to use it in a game.

The only downside of that session was that 2 solid hours of basically doing squats meant that I couldn't move for a few days afterwards!

And totally agree with getting your bat up high first, for both types of sweep. Coming down onto the ball reduces the risk for me.
