Refurb/Re Stickering
« on: January 08, 2025, 10:14:28 AM »

Thoughts from fellow members here, particularly those with their own companies-I bought a `Seconds/Storm Damaged` blade in November`23 from a very reputable small company, which shows no sign of imperfection.I did request some stickers at the time but was told that because of the risk of breakage, mine and other similar Black Friday offers would remain stickerless.
After a season of excellent performance,i sent back to the factory who has been touting a new Refurb service on the socials, then to be told half way through the refurb, still no stickers would be offered for a not inconsiderable refurb fee!
Would a Bat breaking in a game you`re playing in instantly put you off ever buying from the brand and would some of you who run your own companies, take the same stance ?

Am Interested

I would imagine it is geared to prevent people reselling a bat that was sold as storm damaged to an unsuspecting third party without mentioning the storm damage.

If you bought what you were told was, for example, a nice G2 bat and then it snaps with obvious storm damage, of course you're going to think worse of the company that made it.

Fully understand any company that doesn't want to take that reputational risk.

It is responsible for the maker to not offer stickers - for both resale and for reputation.
That doesn't mean that you will not get a bargain.
I remember getting a suspected storm damaged H4L a few years ago - must be around 8-10 years ago.
It was blank due to the possibility of breakage, but I got it for a bargain price.
Because I wanted stickers and had the matching softs at the time, I got some decent Kookaburra stickers elsewhere and applied them. I have used it as 1 of 2 match bats every year since then, and it is still performing well.
I have semi-retired since last season, but it is still a very good bat which performs well. So it has absolutely paid for itself many times over!
Obviously not all suspected storm damaged bats will last this long. So as long as you realise that the life expectancy of these bats are probably limited, then just enjoy it.

That’s a lovely story. And long may the successful bat continue!
I can imagine it being really pleasing when there is a break in play finding the ball youve lost, to just casually lean on the bat with satisfaction, to turn round and say to wicketkeeper, this isnt a kookaburra, its a H4L I got 10 years ago for only £xx because it was deemed as storm damaged 😎🤣🤣
Were you given any maintenance tips or even knocking-in tips at the time?

Out of interest. A question more for the batmakers, when you recognise a storm damaged bat what is your process of tackling it? Is the batmaking process treated as normal or is it given some extra preferential treatment? Are most clefts too far gone to sell?
Have you ever kept one for yourself to use?

For our OP, I can understand from a retailer & brand point of view its best to keep the bat blank. Word of mouth is so important nowadays. If everyone knows the story behind the bat they understand, but so many voices could be telling the wrong story on social media. Bit of a shame that they didnt meet you halfway and offer some ‘this bat was refurbished by’ type stickers.
On the other hand, you could have lots of fun making your own stickers or changing them every season.
Hopefully itll go well beyond a decade for you too.
Feel free to do a review of the bat on here after its first year already…😃

I have sold a 'sub bat' with storm damage to someone on here for 100 quid I think, with Grade 3 full stickers on. They removed the Grade 3 sticker and sold it to someone as a G2 for 160. Since then I've not sold a SD bat with stickers. For this reason, bit also as I don't knowingly sell SD bats at full price. So, I wouldn't want anyone who recognises SD in a bat to think I had sold it at full price, even if I hadnt. If it's blank, it doesn't matter.

I've also seen people selling sub bats from other brands such as Garrard at marked up prices with no mention of SD. Shame, but it happens.

So frustrating isn't it mate. That's why I'll only do refurbs of other brands using our "refurbished" labels now - still not the ideal solution, but it allows those who want to use the branding, without forking out for a new bat, a reasonable option.

Had far too many issues with people falsely selling bats on Ebay over the years, ultimately they've just ruined it for everyone else 🤷🏻‍♂️
