RSM bats - M&H?
« on: May 29, 2025, 03:10:23 PM »

Hi guys,

A very talented junior in my club purchased an expensive senior bat online from M&H, his first mistake of course but hey ho.

His understanding was that it is a premium handmade English willow bat as it is generally printed on the stickers, although reading between the lines I guess that does not mean they are advertising that it is handmade in England!

Anyway the bat he got from M&H is an absolute plank, very heavy, very poor shape, terrible pick up and no ping whatsoever.

Last week in a nets session with old balls it split right up the shoulder, really nasty long crack.

He approached M&H who just took no responsibility at all, didn't offer to repair and told him it was his fault.

I sent it to my very trusted bat maker in Yorkshire who agreed with my points above and suspected something was afoot.

After further inspection he reckons it's a Kashmir willow due to the density of the wood, and observed the shoulder is far too thin and the handle spindly.

Adding further fuel to the fire it has RSM written to the handle, which may back up some of his suspicions.

Before going any further, I'm just intrigued based on the above if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, maybe even experience with M&H and their operations?

Cheers,

Kevin

When did he buy the bat and how much has he used it before it cracked? Was it honestly just through very general use and had it been knocked in etc? Maybe send some pics to assess.

If it's new/hardly used and was just through general play, then to not offer any type of repair or replacement is poor imo.

What I would say is ping and pick up, are to some extent, open to interpretation. What one person will feel is good, another won't. Pick up more than ping, but even then if someone is comparing a fully played in bat to a brand new one, it won't feel as good.

If it was heavier than advertised/requested, then I'd have sent it back initially. However, if a bat I sold cracked badly shortly after use and it wasn't obviously mistreated, I'd offer a repair at least if not a full replacement.

Either way, I'd be fighting them on it personally -

Hi Jonny,

Hope all is well in Leeds!

Genuinely knocked in, used in nets, and recently introduced to games, hardly used. He's a good technical player, playing for Scotland U15 and by no means a thrasher.

The bat maker agreed with my assessment, which I understand is subjective, but honestly this thing is horrific. I never considered it could be Kashmir or an Asian bat though.

Unfortunately he cannot seem to find proof of purchase, and I've already had it repaired for him as M&H washed their hands. I am intrigued enough to give them a call anyway though as this is not what you expect when you pay £350 for a bat from a premium brand.

Young lads don't seem to do common sense, they will not go into a shop or use a trusted independent bat maker like yourself, they would rather waste lots of money repeatedly buying mail order bats from supposed fancy brands, don't understand it myself.

£350 from M&H probably is a lowest grade / kashmir bat!

Understandable tbh. I was never that bothered with the details of my bats beyond the stickers until I was using a full size bat. It didnt seem to really matter with junior bats and from his age I assume hes only recently moved up to a big boy bat. That being said surely a Scotland U15 player would have some sort of sponsorship?

TBH I like nice stickers or iconic stickers =.. I will admit awful stickers will put me off... I know it shouldn't...

On the other hand I like the classic M&H stickers but would never buy one due to knowing what teh brand is currently...
