Stanford 2020 squad
« on: September 09, 2008, 01:56:16 PM »

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/england/7603859.stm
What do people think of this squad and the idea not to have chosen 2020 specialists?
Personally i think it is a mistake as someone like Napier would be of great benifit on the small ground.

Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire) capt, James Anderson (Lancashire) Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Paul Collingwood (Durham), Alastair Cook (Essex), Andrew Flintoff (Lancashire) Stephen Harmison (Durham), Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire), Matt Prior (Sussex) Owais Shah (Middlesex), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire), Ryan Sidebottom (Nottinghamshire), Luke Wright (Sussex).
This is the squad for India odi's as well.

Yeah but i mean if i was one of the players who are regularly in the ODI team, i would be f**King pissed if someone like Napier took my spot, because the ODI players are the ones who play T20 for most of the yr, and deserve a chance to play in the Stanford 2020

Leo you were asking for David Malan to be in the team a few weeks ago after he hit a ton against Lancs! Slightry hypocritical (especially when he isnt even in the team lol)

Anyway back on topic, I like the choice of Samit Patel, I rate him very highly as a cricketer. Hope he gets to play for the million. Still not sure about Swann but give him his due he has stuck at it with England and not gave up fair play to him.

Samit is a very good all round cricketer and deserves every chance he gets, very nice bloke, he does a job with his bowling and on a decent surface he can be very effective, and he has yet to have a chance to prove himself with the bat, his batting is his strongest asset by far. Also watch out for Akhil his younger brother, he has some talent and will be a big name in years to come.  Swann is also a very cricketer and can consider himself very lucky to have been dropped as he hasn't really put a foot wrong, he's bowled with good flight and variation, fielding as always is superb, and he is more than handy with the bat on his day. As previously mentioned basically the ODI which is fair enough, my philosophy is that if you're good enough for the longer version of the game whether it be test or 50 overs, then you have what it takes, people seem to think that it's all about big hitting, the game is played in your head, if you're mentally strong which 50/Test players are then you have all the assets required, work the ball around, put away the bad ball, simple.

I think England have got a very good basic squad because player's like Shah, KP, Freddie can all hit sixes while still playing sensibly. Bowling i'm still not sure about as i still think that Anderson and Broad can both go around the park if they get it wrong.

Dawwid Malan is a genuine player of 20/20 lol
Check his runs and 20/20 average compared to Napier

I think we have to also bear in mind that this squad will also be the squad which plays in India. Probably the reason for going for established and proven ODI players. Dawid Malan hasn't done that much in One Days and with the exception of the century he got he hasn't done that much in 20/20, he's only recently come into the Middlesex side also so is lacking in experience at any level of County Cricket.

Not sure I agree with Alistair Cook being there, I like him, but he isn't suited to T20 at all lol.
