I don't think it ever gets to the stage of choosing Football over anything, the set up of all clubs is to get kids into the system so that they are playing it from pre school upwards, with some serious money changing hands for 11 years signing up to youth policies. I've seen a 14 year old who was playing cricket for our club in the summers signed up at Bristol City and having scouts from Arsenal pursue him parents to swap to them. He was bloody useful batting and bowling at that age but never played a game for the next 6 years as he was full time football. That crucial stage of their development prevents them ever appearing on the cricketing stage.
Phil Taylor has great hand eye coordination but could never be classed as a sportsman....
