(a) We have unofficial umpires and mostly they respect all players equally but occasionally you get the odd idiot!

(b) Again most players respect the umpires but you get a fair few who will argue and debate decisions. Sometimes due to umpires coming from the batting team you get a few dodgy decisions!

Hope thats ok!

(a) official umpires seem to respect all player regardless of ability however unofficial tend to not give out that obvious lbw appeal against a worse player.
(b) in junior cricket only a few of our team seem to respect the umpires, i would say me and a couple more do as we realize how hard it would be! that goes for official and unofficial umpires. As for my other club where we play 50 over senior cricket umpires are generally respected but obviously theres always one.

Hope thats ok

Offical, I believe 95% of players respect the decision and take it on the chin, however you get the odd few very rare though this is just human tho.  Unoffical is a different story, around our leagues very few decisions aren't questioned.

Offical - Yes

Unoffical - No.

Hope this is ok.

(a) We only have unofficial umpires but i believe they do show respect to every player.
(b) I'd say around 80% do but sometimes you get the odd idiot argueing for every decision.

(a) all official umpires bar one i have played with have showed respect to each player. However in all matches with unofficial umpires there has been someone who has respected the better player.

(b) roughly 75-80 percent of players respect umpires, but it can be lost easily in junior cricket, especially for unofficial umpires. Also word of mouth can influence too. For example i was playing a rep game a few weeks ago and we got an umpire that was apparently shocking. this was coming from our coach but he didnt say it in these words. he said more in the way of 'losing it'. There was proof of this that when balls were going wide of the pitch and he called them legal. Also our captain had a wild slash at on chest high outside of off and inside edged it on onto his pads and was given straight away. He nicked off a few overs later when he found he shouldnt have been there.

Sambo, I don't quite understand the 'he nicked off' bit. Are you talking about the umpire?

(a) I have never persoanally came across an umpire who has not respected a player, whether the umpire is official or not. No bias towards the more able or those of lesser ability.

(b) I believe that official umpires are given more respect due to the fact they are officials :L, but the respect given to unoffical umpires is only of a slightly lower standard... generally just a few grumbling and complaints that needn't of been shared.

a) no even an "official" umpire has sniggered at our 11 getting peppered, and being hopeless, which although is funny, is not on from an ump. and unofficial umpires seem to just give up with the lower order and give anything so they can get lunch early, but that is just my experiance

B) it's mix and match, no ones ever argued with an umpire in a match i've played in, but of course they( myself included) have given a look, and mumbled off the field, i've never seen anyone do anything more then that.

Okay thanks for the answers folks. I know we only have a small panel and the answers are a little diverse but there is some great information there.

Sambo has mentioned that a coach seemed to have a poor opinion of an umpire which is perhaps the most interesting comment here. As coaching becomes more 'professional' for a better word it seems that there are two distinct paths paths teams and players within those coaching areas.

The good coaches ( clubs and representative teams) understand the meaning of how cricket is played and instill both pride and understanding into their players as well as good general coaching. Part of that process includes from a club level training parents in correct umpiring techniques with the help of their local umpire's association. Part of that process includes respect for the umpires and advice to players that when given out you tuck the bat under your arm and get off. Poor coaches will blame everyone else for a team's failure including the umpires.

Recently I discuss ed these matters with a number of people and one or two seemed quite horrified that a game could progress and with both teams fighting it out tooth and nail being very competitive and yet pleasnat to all. It seems that the all pervading vocal aggressiveness so evident in some places is being taken as the only way to win. Wrong folks. Coaching the captain how to set correct fields quickly, how to apply pressure without verbal rubbish and keeping minds on the game rather than rubbish will bring out the best in talent.

Getting back to this coach, perhaps he needs to find another job frankly.

Yesterday was a great game. The day before one team was an absolute pain for the first few overs. Talking when a bowler had started his run up, clapping endlessly, stupid comments and then they started to charge on appeal. Hmmm serious talking to time. They lost the game and the respect of two very, very experienced umpires. Well yes the team lost our respect but the coaching staff even more so. If the coaching staff can't be pleasant to umpires at the start of a game then it generally does not get better during it. I had a talk to one of the parents I knew after the match and was told that the team was coached to act like they did. Hmmm and yet folks still wonder why many senior umpires refuse to umpire in underage carnivals.

Another question coming this weekend.
