Pick ups
« on: January 23, 2009, 04:58:08 PM »

Is there any chance we can make it illegal on this forum to say a bat picks up lighter than it is?
Often people say it weighs 2.10 but picks up like a 2.8, but nobody says their bat at 2.8 weighs 2.8, but instead 2.6. It is completely lacking logic and is quite absurd! Do any batmakers have an opinion on this?

the pickup of a bat is quite subjective,
a strong guy will think every bat picks up light because the weight is minimial in comparison to their lifting strength.  a puny guy is going to think the opposite.

i don't think this is possible unless you are going to go to everyone's house and judge the pickup yourself, some bats do indeed pickup lighter so you can't just go saying that people who say this are lying

It is purely subjective and so is used purely for marketing without any come back, I say this bat picks up like a feather and you say it feels like a railway sleeper. We are both right.

What is needed is an industry benchmark for balance. A measurement of where the bat balances in relation to the distance from the center to the toe in cm. The shorter the distance the heavier the balance/pick up.

At the moment it is subject to abuse, you order the most expensive bat to find it is cosmetically low and you are told that the grading was on performance. In that case the bat should be cheaper as clefts are sold by willow merchants on cosmetic beauty. That happened to the last bat I bought as a punter, sold to me as £220 top of the range and grade 3/4 willow which costs one third of the grade 1. I have nothing against grade 3/4 being sold for top dollar as I prefer it to anything under SS but please don't tell me it cost more.

No point in fighting here about the pick up, you cannot disprove anyone's statement even though your point about every bat feeling lighter means that every bat needs to be rejudged.

For example;
Newbery Mjolnir 2lb 8oz, 2 grips.
Balance point - 37cm from the toe, 48.5cm from top of the handle
Kookaburra Genesis 2lb 9oz, 2 grips
Balance point - 37.5cm from toe, 48cm from top of handle

I completely agree with Slogger and Talisman. This is purely subjective.

I have experienced bats which the guys in the shop said had a good light pick-up for the weight, but when I picked them up they felt heavy.

For my first Warsop, I just told Tony that I wanted a bat which felt like a 2.10/2.11 but make the biggest bat he can with such pick-up. The bat I got, was a disaster as it felt so heavy. When I called Tony and explained him the situation and find out what was the problem, Tony finally asked me the question " What is your weight, height and built". And here was the answer to our problem. Tony is a big well built guy and I am probably 80% of his weight and a few inches shorter.

Also, though my personal experience, sometimes the bat which felt light and picked up well suddenly feels a bit heavy and not as well balanced. I had this problem in a couple of matches when I had bowled 15 overs and had to bat at a No.3 fairly early on.

I had a Puma Vendetta which was 2.12 but picked up better than the 2.10 Fusion I got from James (as I took James' word for the pick-up and James has a slightly heavier frame than me). Can't blame James or Fusion for that.

so it all depends on the built of the person, their grip, middle position on the bat and maybe how you are feeling mentally and physically at that particular point of time.

As for having some regulation on commenting on the pick-up - that's the least bit of honesty one can expect from a seller. I have bought and sold bats on the forum with the understanding if the buyer does not like the pick-up he can return the bat.

Clearly was a bit tounge in cheek, but i just find it annoying that everyone goes on about how light their bats pick up is. Im pretty weedy and find 2.8 just right, so god knows how light that feels to the likes of pietersen and flintoff who use bats around that weight.
