Is this fussy problem not just a logical progression of buying bats/life in general.

We have become a nation of consumers, we no longer buy what we need, we buy what we have been swayed by the marketers to believe we need which used to be called a "want".

So when we buy a bat of course we want a great one, but the fact anyone reading this post is part of a cricket equipment forum the "want" factor is amplified. Someone puts a picture up of a 2.8 with 30mm edges and it gains plaudits so someone else puts up a 2.8 with 32mm edges and it gets more plaudits so the new buyer asks and gets 35mm edges, this gets it's own thread and the bar has been raised. No one will want to admit to buying a expensive bat which does not match up to these high spec's, the fact that is that we all have a fair bit of envy and so we bluster our way to thinking we need something with 40+mm edges or we are screwed.

I think that the recent Laver issues have shown that we have unrealistic expectations as to what can be made and coupled with a desire by a manufacturer to match them. With no disrespect to James there have been a huge batch of bats on the forum that have been wrong. I'm not sure if they were all attempted and failed or just could not be made but we need to back down a little in the size envy stakes.

I've been that incredibly fussy sod but now I've adopted a more open mind set to bats and I'm trying to impart that on buyers, lets go remember that the bat has to perform but not forget the psychological importance of the looks of a bat. A nice balance is not that hard to find, lets not get too obsessed with bat nirvana when you may just have it already.

I had an M&H is an solution shape back in 2008, after a Season of spooning drives and other shots I realised that although I loved this bats performance. The weight and shape were not suited to my game, 2lbs 10oz and low middle.

After a little knock around with an old bat I realised I needed a bat with a higher middle. So I took advantage of the v sports sale and got a Kook Blade Strike in 2lbs 6oz half price for £70. I used this bat for the 2009 season and had my best season, scoring my first 50 and being put up the top of the order by both teams. Obviously, when buying that bat I didn't know about the grains and just went on the profile. I took a gamble and it paid off.

Then at the end of the 2009 season I wanted a bat with the same shape but a bit heavier and chunkier. I got a bargain from Craig McLean. A Champ sports bat, grade 1, mid middle, 2lbs 9oz. I used it and loved it. I sold the blade and the champ was my main bat (and still is). I had the best season in 2010 open the batting on both days of the weekend. Hit over 500 league runs and more in all cricket, with 5 50's

Although I had a great bat, a bit of birthday money mid season made me buy a pro mongoose of Tom to try one out. I used it in a league match the day I got it and hit 50. However, I wasn't convinced. After a couple more matches in which I hit low scores and weighed back to the champ (which had been on loan to a teamate who hit 203*). I used the champ and hit 47 on a crap wicket.

I decided the champ was the bat for me and after putting the mongoose up on here I ended up with a redback allegiance premier. Got this through in September and used it a couple few times but could see it was the shape for me, paradox would have been better. I sold it and used some of the money to pay for a refurb and stickers for my champ.

So the last few bats I've had.

M&H - £100
Blade - £70
Champ - £70
Mongoose - £120
Redback - exchange

The most I have ever spent on a bat is £120, and I have had some amazing bats.

Ohh and, now i have found my perfect bat in the champ. I shall be getting the ba copied when it gives up. Probably by M&H as I love the performance of their bats.

I only have 1 bat and use it for everything, except mucking around when I use an eye in. Using the same bat for nets and matches really helps my timing.

You both bring some pretty good points up however, if you pay good money for something that does bring expectation along with it. When drying processes are a key selling point for Laver, this does bring bat size or mass to the attention of the buyer or as you put it Mike 'want'.

When that is not delivered buyers get angry!!

I had completely forgotten about that! However, once I had got it I could see it wasn't the bat for me!

completely agree with this, my newbery, although not the prettiest, and not a massive bat, goes nicely and i love the feel of it, if i ever have a custom made i'll try and replicate it i think

The point of this thread really is two fold - as Talisman says it is for people to be realistic as to what can be made from willow - but also to ask people about what the expect from a "custom made bat" and the guy making it.

As I said in the original post, for me the bat should be made to suit the batsman's style of play and to maximise the main scoring shots shots, not to suit the fashionable shape of the day - my view is that your teammates will be more pleased with you for making a match winning/saving innings rather than having the biggest bat.

I would be interested if any of the bat makers have any views on this... (please!)

Because to many people are commenting on stuff they have never purchased or likely too.

Too many sheep followers not having a go but read the drivel that some talk about on here is laughable.

Maybe people should keep to there experiences and not hearsay or (No Swearing Please).

stop using common sense in a topic with none...

For me it is simple if i can pull a ball at a set speed and if the bat picks up well that is it for me.

Maybe i'm being a bit overlooked but pick up and feel is all i'm after nothing more nothing less.

Performance will come if it has been pressed right by the right person.

Couldn't agree with you guys more. I've tried a variety of bats but keep coming back to the style that suits me best is longer than average and has a mid-low middle at a weight which is lighter than I always used to buy. Which is the spec I now give to batmakers for a custom, as I posted in a different topic.

I'd rather leave it to a batmaker to make me something that is the best they can at the weight and middle position I've asked for than go for something with a very specific set of looks, spine height, etc. Maybe because when I started playing, these bats with ridiculous edges didn't exist, so I am used to not scoring runs with a piece of willow that weighs the same without huge edges makes a difference!?

I do think that all the furore around the Laver bats has been because some of the expectations may have been a little unreal, and I agree completely with Talisman on that point. Physics and natural materials limit what you can achieve. As long as it picks up well and feels right, then whether it has a bit of heartwood or a butterfly stain really shouldn't matter!

EDIT: I'd love to try the Luna, in LHLB, which is what the GM bat selector gave me, if anyone at GM wants to send me one!

don't quite understand the dig at me, i'm 17, of course i'm not going to be able to afford a laver, but my point was that if you're paying a premium over the special reserve for good looking willow as well as good performance then you'd expect a grade 1 looking bat

I agree that we as cricketers often complicate things more than needed. Are we all not just in search of the ultimate, best performing bat? You have a great bat and it goes like stink but after a while you want another one just like it or even better! You then start looking at different shapes and bat makers etc. Until we stop playing we'll always be looking for that next best bat in order to score even more runs and feel more confident at the crease.
