Can someone enlighten me? I am not really a bat geek as such, certainly not as much as some on here. Just curious as to what exactly heartwood is and is it performance enhancing?
Cheers

Heartwood is from the centre of the tree and they say its stronger thus why you see if on the outside edge of some bats. Not sure if its been scenically proven.

I think Mike suggested that the heartwood was more brittle, but perhaps a little less dense........i think this is due to the lack of sap present in the heartwood.

Heartwood is simply willow with a higher resin content causing the different colouration compared to white willow (sapwood) People have a lot of different views on it, personally I think it tends to be more brittle in comparison.

The centre of the tree that isn't actively growing, i.e water and nutrients tend to be carried in the sapwood (white). Therefore likely to be less moisture content. Make of that what you will.

Heartwood is more brittle due to the lower moisture content and should go on the edge you hit least, hopefully the outside one.
