Used a Pro Bat the other day...
« on: May 26, 2011, 11:46:09 AM »

Used a Gray Nics Xiphos Pro Performance, which formerly belonged to Steven Mullaney, but was left in his locker when he moved from Lancs, and so one of his team mates nicked it, and has given it to one of my team mates.

My team mate let me have a bash with it at nets.

Pick up was lovely, and it was a chunky piece of wood. No scales or anything, but guesses are weight was about 2.8oz.

....but other than that, bit of a plank. We had an open net, so got chance to see how far the ball could go. Played one nice cover drive, which wasn't quite middle - felt horrible. Wasn't forgiving at all.

So I guess Pro bats aren't always what they're cracked up to be (ceraintly the ones the pro's are prepared to give away/leave behind!)

Netted with a couple of Azhar Ali's bats (before he used Ishan/Stickers) They were Maliks, big for the weight, not outstanding grains and really thin handles. Wasn't particularly taken on by them. Not sure I was comfortable havig so much wood in the bat for the light weight, just didn't feel right.

The cossies really rate Jonny's slazenger but they haven't used that many bats and being 6'4 semi-pro rugby players they don't need much assistance to clear the ropes.

Don't expect much from county players' bats, quite often they're off the shelf bats.

One of our lads has got one of Afridi's bats.  He scored 79 last Saturday and was smoking it all over the shop.
