I have never ever seen, or heard, of someone being given out caught behind when the ball hits the pad strap.

To me it's just down to personal preference. I personally have the straps facing outwards, always have and always will. When there is overlap, I just fold the excess so it can't be hit.

As said before straps inside due to not wanting any chance of creating a sound if the ball passes them and getting mistaken for a nick.
