Trouble with running ???
« on: July 16, 2011, 10:13:03 AM »

Good morning ,
I wonder if you can help me , I have recently started re trying to regain my fitness , I try to run on roads but I find that hurts my ankles but recently I am finding when I run on grass my ankles are starting to ache on again . Now it's fair to say due to a few months of unhealthy living beer and kebabs I have turned in to a sort of rob key figure (no offence ment he is a cracking player ) I seem to be able to run for 5 min then I am knackerd I go to they gym and I feel fine in a treadmill but still get aching ankles .
Does anyone have any advise to help my sore ankles I see cricketer wrap tape around there ankles I also do have 1 foot larger than the other I know strange ha
Any help would be appreciated .

If you are suffering ankle pain you may need to lose weight before you try and run hard. It sounds as though you are pushing too much early on, which is a surefire way to get injured.

It's also worth seeing a physio to make sure your gait isn't a problem.

You could be running too fast when you're on the road, it's better to go really slow and run longer then it is to run fast for a much shorter distance.

I'm 19, so whenever I run past someone I speed up to look good ,lol, but I found that if I do that I lose my rythm and it takes me ages to get it back. I don't know about any tips, but just walk and then just pick your pace up and then turn that into a slow jog and just carry that pace the whole way through and don't worry about what people think, you don't know them so no need to worry. Maybe one tip is to make sure you are breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth, this way if you start breathing heavily quickly, you know to slow down and steady your pace.

It sounds as though you are restarting and trying to relive former glories. You should run at a pace where you can hold a conversation while you are getting going, and if your ankles are hurting at that level, go and see someone.

One of the causes of ankle pain can be pronation where your feet don't land flat and to get that checked out requires either a dedicated running store or a physio. They will check out your gait. It could be as simple sd needing a different pair of trainers.

Yep always run for time not for distance and pace. So roll along for a greater amount of time e.g 30 min or 45 min run 2 to 3 times a week

Also get good running shoes e.g Brooks, Asics, New Balance or Mizuno's

I would try and do as little running as possible until the weight comes off. In the meantime i would suggest swimming as its no impact and will tone your whole body. You will just do more damage pounding the roads.
Sounds like you may have some ligament damage if you have always had pain there, but either way loosing weight will reduce the pressure on youre joints.
Alot of problems with feet and ankles are due to poor posture as well and the way you walk and run. It may be that you have an underlying problem else where that is causing the pain in youre ankles.

The best way to lose weight is remember calories used has to be greater than calories consumed. Exercise simply helps with that.

You do sound like a big unit Shaq! If you have pain in the ankles then take it easy and use a cross trainer. Anything low impact or resistance training is probably best as is swimming. I am 5.10 but have always had some  pain in my ankles as they are quite thin and if I over do it then the pain spreads to the shins. Ive always avoided running simplf  to avoid the impact but power walking is fine if you can do 45 mins you will see some results.

You do sound like a big unit Shaq!------ that is an awsome way of putting it hahah, like i have said i just get pains i am not out of breath but i can only do a five minute stint , swimming is not an option as its miles away from me to the closest one , i only seem to have a beer belly and the dreaded moobs i need to loose them when im on a cross trainer i dont get knackerd so i start to feel as if is this really working ??
