Nervy Starting...
« on: September 11, 2011, 07:41:36 PM »

Hi all,

Just finished my last game of the season and am once again really disappointed with myself. This is the first season I've played in two years and it's not been great, top score 18* and averaging around 14 with the bat. My main problem really seems to be my nervy starting, with the exception of one match I can't think of a time where I've got out to a really good ball or a great piece of bowling. I just never seem to really settle down. Today for instance I cam in at 4, played a few solid forward defensive strokes, hit a nice four,a two, a single and then for some reason ran myself out (admittedly from a good direct hit). It's upsetting me because I know I'm capable of scoring more runs as I have in the past, I'm still striking the ball nicely but I can't seem to build an innings without doing something stupid and letting the nerves get the better of me.

Any advice?

if you average 14 and made a top score of 18, that means you must have got more than 10 in almost every game you batted.

is the question that you are a poor starter or you try and play too many shots too soon in an innings?

Not sure, I can't think of any really irresponsible shots I've played. It's more a sort of stiffness and ill-ability to relax at the crease. For example the other day I got out when I was going well on 18 because I played a flick off the hips too far in front of me with almost rigid arms and ended up sending a catch to square leg's left side

I guess I've played about 13 games or so. Similar types of dismissals really, always get a few runs on the board but haven't properly settled in at all. Partly I think this has been that I've had to bat in some pretty nasty situations. You know where you go in and have to hit out or get out, or where I've run out of partners. However four or five times I've certainly had a good opportunity to build an innings, and haven't :(
