When the current deals run out, the teams who bought Dhoni, Brett Lee etc will have first option to re-sign them. If they choose not to re-sign the player, then he goes into the new auction.

Some glimmer of hope for the Deccan Chargers as Andrew Symonds has hit form. He hit 137 off 111 balls.

However, if this gets him a call to join the national side for the one day series he will loose $500,000 to $900,000

What about players like Warne and Gilly who haven't played since the last IPL are they still playing?

Yes.

Warne is the captain & coach of the Rajasthan Royals.

Gilly will probably lead the Deccan Chargers.

KP may lead the Bangalore Royal Challengers

I was disappointed to see that VVS had been stripped of the captaincy of the Deccan Chargers. It wasn't VVS's fault that some of his gun players where rubbish last time out, such as Gibbs and the over rated slogger Afridi. Also VVS was injured for some part of the tournament. Therefore the batting was carried by Gilly and Rohit Sharma.

Also I don't think that KP should captain Bangalore, if Dravid is to be replaced, it should be Uthappa, as he's the Karnataka captain.

Jeet being a state team captain doe not mean that the same person should be Captain of the IPL team. If u recall Uthappa was playing for the Mumbai Indians last time.

That way Wasim Jaffar should captain Mumbai Indians.

Sorry Yash, but I have to disagree. The competion is callled the Indian Premier League, therefore IMO, the captain of each team should be Indian.

Yes Uthappa was playing for Mumbai last time out, therefore he didn't have the opportunity to be the vice captain for The Royal Challengers last time, with Dravid being the 'Icon' player, only he could captain the Royal Challengers last time.

IIFC, Latit Modi said that the 'Icon' players cannot be sold and should be captaining their respective side.

I'm pretty sure if you ask the people of Bangalore who they want as captain of their side, they would prefer one of their own.

Mumbai's favorite son is captaining their side, so I doubt that Mumbai's fans would want Jaffer as their captain! With respect to Wasim Jaffer, he's an awful Twenty20 player, and IMO shoudn't be in any squad or at worst be a player/coach.

just because its indian premier league shouldnt mean the captain is indian, thats just stupid the captain should ne a good leader and a good decison maker, like saying because its the english county championship it should be a english captain, by your logic dale benkenstein shouldnt have captained durham to the title

Exactly my point Irwinster, Indian Competition/English league, therefore should be an Indian/Englishman leading that side.

You shouldn't have a captain who isn't going to stay for the whole period. I don't agree that a captain has to be from the same country that the competition's in, it should be the best player tactically or most respected.

Jeet how many matches did Sachin play in the last IPL. Harbhajan and Shaun Pullock captained the side.

I think the point is who can lead the team well in this shorter version of the game and can pump the adreline and moral. Dravis is too passive to inject any venom into the team.

Shane Warne was the captain of the Rajasthan Royals..... so cannot accept the point you made about Lalit Modi having said that Icon player can only captain....

The way I see it is the IPL was created to develop Indian cricket. By having the overseas players involved, India's youngsters will improve more quickly.

With regard to Dravid's passive leadership style, Robin Uthappa is the total opposite. Therefore he should replace Dravid. As it would benefit Indian cricket more.

As you point out the little champion was injured for 9 games, but if he wasn't and Jaffer was in the Mumbai squad, Sachin would still have been captain.

With regard ro Shane Warne and the Royals, the Royals don't have an 'Icon', therefore their owners went for Warne and Smith.

Jeet - was development of Indian players really the driver for the IPL? Or was it more about spectacle and promoting the game? I don't think a players nationality should have bearing on who captains a team. Even if it is about development, then surely a young Indian player would learn more from the Warnes, Smiths and Pollocks of the game, then being captained by an inexperienced Indian

Sorry Johnny but you don't get much more experience than Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly and VVS. over 500 Test caps if i'm not mistaken.

The tournament was created due to the success of the Twenty20 Cup in England. Obviously Lalit Modi and the BCCI took the IPL to the other extreme by having the franchise's and auctions for players etc. And the potential of vast amount money being made was a selling point of the IPL. But one of the other selling points was the development of Indian cricket.

Jeet - the players you list were their franchise captain's weren't they? (apart from Sachin, who was injured) - even from your list, I'd really only say Dravid and Ganguly are proven world class captains, and as mentioned previously, Dravid's game perhaps doesn't suit 20/20 so much. I think you are expressing a very blinkered point of view.

I agree, Indian captains are probably preferable, but I don't think it should be an imposed rule, and where a proven player/captain is available that isnt Indian I don't see the problem in giving them the 'armband'.
