People cheat all the time and there is no point taking the high ground as you only end up losing. I got some fearful stick in a league game last season for a slight glove that the umpire didn't hear. This team of saints had already turned down 3 plumb lbws when we bowled to further their cause, why should they continue to benefit from cheating? I batted on and we won, as we would of done much earlier if they had given our lbws.

That sort of thing really annoys the hell out of me - we played a side a couple of years back who gave literally nothing - including their skipper getting away with being caught at slip, three fine edges to the keeper, a catch off the glove at short leg, several LBWs and one call of dead ball when their star batsman was about to be run out by the length of the pitch.  Then when we batted, they questioned every single decision, even though the vast majority were appeals from their left armer who wanted to bowl big offies over the wicket and get LBWs. 

Seamer bowls a big inducker that goes off a thin edge onto my pad and rebounds back to him.  He appeals for the LBW, umpire turns him down...

...end of the over one of his team mates points out that I may have hit it without cottoning that the ball had gone straight back...and the lad starts giving me all kinds of abuse!

I don't think I would play cricket if we didn't have official umpires.

What is the reason for you having to umpire your own games? Lack of umpires or cost?

lack of umpires. It is crap as unless you play a like minded side who play fair.

My father umpires Homes Counties Premier League and he doesn't like doing lower levels. Lower levels, according to him, are full of players who rate themselves and make the umpires life a complete pain.

We're lucky I suppose that we have neutral league umpires. If it was a friendly then I'd definitely walk, but in a league match it depends on how blatant the nick is and who we're playing against as I've played against the same players/teams for a long time.

Used to walk for everything, but now as I say it depends....

On the flip side it you do nick it and don't get given, it's always worth a quick word with the umpire at the non strikers end along the line of 'You know what 'insert team' are like, they appeal for everything - glad you've got the balls to stand up against them'

To be fair, all of our ones games and over half of our twos and threes had umpires last year - it always seems to kick off on the weeks that don't!

A trick that one of our old players used to do (he was a bit of a league legend, piling the runs up and I used to look up to him as a kid) was to give the umpire his keys at the start of the game for him to look after them. Then used to get the patter flowing asking how he is etc etc. Rarely saw him get out LBW! Who do you play for no1northernbloke as I play in Lancashire.

Yep, 'make the umpire your friend' was the saying of another local legend who played here. He used to brew them a cup of tea each before each home game. He could be hit bang in front and all three being knoecked out the ground, but his reputation and the work he put in with the umpires meant that it'd be just sliding down leg.

Play in Leicestershire, northernbloke thing is from when I had a spell in Bristol and was christened it. Netted with a team down there, but can't remember the name now.... Steve Jenkins and his brother played for them (back in 1999), but I moved back up before the start of the season

What goes around comes around, For each time I have walked I have somebody walk when I had the caught behind. Apart from one guy  >:(but im sure he will get his one day...

In our area, I (along with most guys I play with/have played with) am on good terms with the umpires, the more light-hearted banter works with them, I got an unhealthy amount of LBW decisions given for an SLA last season!

Normally depends on the situation and type of game etc. Dont walk on 99, 0 or anything similar, also if i've been out of form will sponge it up and not walk, But being a keeper am always prepared for the stick if i don't.

Likewise if you don't walk and i have caught you, then it is time for a 'chat'. :/

Can you elaborate a little on the South African self belief??

I've played with some lovely Saffas but I've known a few who have used their ego more than their brains against the oppo. Typical example would trying to take the batsmans head off on puddings when line and length would be better. It's a good trait as well, believing in yourself, but tends to be the Saffas that typify it more than others.
