The first cricket box was used in 1874.  The first cricket helmet was introduced in 1974. So, it took 100 years for men to twig that their brains were also worth protecting.

I've had this idea for a while, and was going to try it on an old bat.

What about on the edges small grooves cut in at approximately 45 degrees (open to variation) from face of bat to back. (Higher at the face end) spaced roughly an inch apart

The effect of this could be that balls which clip edges are directed towards the ground (sorry bowlers and slips).

Not sure on the legality of this

A bit innovative like when woodworm put scoops out.

Anyone with better IT skills than me (MS Paint amateur here) might be able to notch up a design.

In celebration of my 20th post I 've decided to add a picture to my profile - but can not seem to do it!!

Any suggestions?

Have you tried using a URL or your own picture? I had some issues using a URL when I first joined.

I'll go through the process now to see what could go wrong.

The other side to this is that you introduce additional weakness into an already weak part of the bat. What is more likely to happen is that the edge of the groove will get broken off and the ball will still carry to the catcher, unless you have some very thick or very strong wood on the edges.
