South Africa seem to be the new favorites and if it goes there it is the right decision imo.

Bucko what the hell does that mean? The competition is called the Indian Premier League, it's not called the South African Premier League.

Defiantly the correct call if held in South Africa

It would be ridiculous to hold a international tournament here in march!

From a financial point of view the benefits to the economy for us would be huge. Lalit Modi thinks around £100 million, they have 400 hotel rooms a night!

Of course you may piss off Sky in the process since they just paid £300 million for england cricket rights.

The best players in the world playing in england, sounds like a good idea to me!

Bucko - if the pitches where soo bad, how comes IPL 2008 was so sucessful?

Also there's nothing wrong with India's stadia. Chennai, Mumbai, Mohali, Delhi, Kolkata etc all Test venues, where always sold out in IPL 2008.

Sultan of Swing - I know that Lalit Modi said that IPL 2009 is due to earn £75-100m, but I highly doubt that ECB or Cricket South Africa will pocket the lot. Maybe 50% of gate fees and BCCI paying some sort of good will, say £10m. The franchise owners wouldn't give away all the profits just to ensure that IPL 2009 runs.

I think there would be very good crowds in england, better than aus and s.a probably depending on size of grounds.

Sultan I never said that crowds in England would be bad, but compared to India they would be considerably less. For example Eden Gardens, Kolkata hold 100,000, wheres Lords holds 20,000? Gate fees would already be down by 80%.

Yea i agree jeet there is the potential for loss by the franchise owners but benefits for the british economy. I am sure that the players would be rather be playing in front of 100,00 at eden gardens than 10,000 at say headingley in april!

Its worth remembering there will be very few hotel rooms in london avaliable at that time aswell... what with the Fa cup semi final and final and the london marathon.
Lords will also be out of action for the first game as the MCC are playing Durham there.

To be honest if the ECB can't guarantee at least 75% of the matches will be played at the major International venues, the ECB should say it's not feasible.

The IPL would be devalued if it was played at small out grounds.

Well cardiff, headingley and old trafford have all had there outfields relaid i dont know when they will be ready to use. But Yorkshires wasnt suppose to be laid until the beginning of april, but for some reason they seem to have started this week! I know they can play on it two weeks after its completed.

It's been announced in India that IPL 2009 is South Africa bound.
