How much is a used bat worth?
« on: April 19, 2012, 01:32:39 PM »

Leading on from the thread regarding current eBay prices for bats I just though I would pose this question...

How much is a used bat worth and by what criteria do we place a value on it?

Is it on perceived performance? Original RRP? Fashion? Rarity?

Personally I don't believe any used (or just 'knocked in') bat is worth more than £150, irrespective of the bats original price. Not saying this is right but it's my own personal view. I am interested to see what other people think.

So how do you value your bats when it comes time to sell them?

I think £100 to £130 for most used bats,

£150 if there is minimal sign of use as you could argue its as good as new. I enjoy the brand new bats that were only used for a 10minute net

It is worth what someone will pay for it. Personally, if you offered me a knocked in new bat over a new bat, I would not pay less for the knocked in bat.

A knocked in bat is worth more than a non-knocked in bat, sure, but the motive for sale over-rules on this one...Put bluntly, why would you sell a stick you had just acquired? Unless it's a truly distinct shape that you didn't appreciate at point of purchase, there's only so much one can believe you just 'don't get on with it' lol ;)

If it's worth what someone will pay for it then why place any asking price on it in the first place then?

Depends on what you're after I guess. I tend to buy my new bats knocked in so I pay more for that anyway.

Otherwise I try to use them for a couple of nets before deciding that enough is enough! By that point they are proper used so if someone pays what I want, great, otherwise it'll go for what it does...!

But how do you arrive at the price you want? What criteria do you apply to a bat in order to value it?

I'm with Tim here, a new bat which is fully knocked should be worth more than a brand new un-knocked bat. That is because of the time spent in knocking a bat, but this figure should not be overly high.

Devalue of bat in my opinion is certainly when one uses it, each net session I'd say devaluates the bat by 3.5%. By ten solid net session bat would be properly battered and possibly have some cracks etc formed as well.

Right, so the price of a used bat is purely based on how much it cost new minus how much it's been used?

The main issue I have is why the bats being sold, you see a lot of 'injuries' or 'just don't get one with it' which often screams 'dud' to me, and I thin that's one of the main reason I'd never pay near the retail price for a second hand bat, that and you lose the custom aspect if it's from a manufacturer who offers such a service.

In my opinion yes.

A bat used for a season should be sold well below 50% albeit it might be in pristine condition, but a complete season use is quite a lot and I think bat last maximum two complete seasons (includes ALL games and net sessions).

It could be true, however, I don't think the primary reason of selling brand new bats is due to bats deteriorating playing abilities. I think a lot of the time we get carried away in our emotions and go on spending spree, after some time we realize what we did was not very wise but rather a silly move as we did not really need that bat.

Happens with me but at the end the love of the game and more importantly willow addiction leads me to other buy.

Not sure about ebay, but in this forum, some second hand bats are true quality and much better value for money in my opinion. I feel 80% of these sales are due to the fact that most of us in the forum get lured to buy new bats and end up buying too many surplus quality bats.

It would be hard to generalize a price for a second hand bat and in my view it depends on the present condition of the bat and also a lot on the seller and buyer negotiating capabilities and his urgency to sell/buy.

No. The used price of a bat is more complex than that. It's what it cost new, less how much it's been used, multiplied by rarity factor (which can be a requirement) and a desire to own factor.

On the pure logic of the statement, a GN dynadrive in good used condition should go for £20 max, yet on ebay they go for £40-£70, which is ridiculous given age and likely use.

If it is a recent model, that's a relatively fair statement though.

As for custom made bats; if they are custom made for you, then second hand they will be worth less to someone else, in my view!

Good that you have mentioned this.

In this case I would find it hard to believe reasoning behind the sale especially if its made specifically for that person.

Unless it came to a different specifications that is different story altogether.
