First bat ever owned
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:33:00 AM »

Thought i would start a new topic considering i should be writing a dissertation and this seems like a worthy distraction!  :-\
The first bat i ever owned was a gray nicolls scoop 2000, covered in that horrible white covering and quite simply a stinker of a bat.......
Write down the first bat you ever owned and what it was like........ (please)

Well bar the plank from the Pound Shop... my first real bat was a Slazenger V800 Panther (Kashmir Willow) it went really well though so I was happy ;)

Mine was a Gunn and Moore Skipper that was also rather white and had a middle the size of a gnat's chuff but as it was my first bat was a prized possession!

My first english willow bats were - POWER (used by Kapil Dev and a few other Indian and Pakistani cricketers in the mid 80's) and a Symonds Tusker.

The Tusker was a excellent bat and served me very well for 3-4 years (pretty longtime). The POWER one was a decent stick and ended up as a autograph bat after a (year's usage)

Both the bats were Polycoated (something like a varnish) which protected the bat from water and drying but made the willow look goldenish brown.

first proper bat was a slazenger v600 ultimate.
didn't realise the importance of knocking in at the time so it broke in 1/2 a season but no knocking in did have the result of morphing it into a rocket launcher!

My beloved Gunn and Moore Striker, what a gun! I did a kiddies cricket set bat before that which was nice but I don't think it was willow.

If I remember correctly my first proper bat was a Gray Nicholls Powerspot, followed by about 6 Slazenger V12s which broke one after the other, before I gave up on them.

1st SH bat was a Newbery Mjolnir, which kept me going from the age of 14/15 til 27 (though I did have 6/7 seasons out of the game after uni due to work) when it broke brutally - was a lovely piece of willow.

Then bought a Slaz Elite Pro, which has recently been refurbed by Gary @ Redback, but is now my net/spare bat, as I have a spankingly good Redback Allegiance, which shall be causing carnage across Hertfordshire this summer.

My first bat was a size 4 Open Championship Autograph. Being left handed, David Gower was one of my idols when I was a kid and I really wanted a Gray-Nic Powerspot, but then he changed sponsor to OC and my Dad got me one of these as it was cheap. It was bought from Sugg Sports in Chesterfield when we were there visting family.

Seem to remember having a Newbery size 6 before their image change... it was the one with the orange and black graphics... think Gatting was using them at the time.  To be fair for a small bat it pinged really well.
