The Ultimate Cricket Bag
« on: June 25, 2012, 08:20:04 PM »

Been in and around cricket for around 25 years and ive been searching for the ultimate cricket bag and time after time ive been left more than a little disappointed for many reasons like too small not enough pockets/compartments or simply the quality was poor and many come with a hefty price tag which is never justified.

I like to carry 3 bats which needs to be in a separate compartment from my other kit, separate compartment for boots 1 pair only and i carry 2 sets of whites a towel and various shower room products. Obviously i carry 1 pair of batting gloves and a pair of batting pads and my helmet. i also carry a number of spare grips and a bat mallet & grip cone and other accessories.

The best bag ive had so far has been the Aero stand up bag however after a while it starts to sag and not stand up correctly despite endless adjustment, some changing rooms are fairly small so it gets a pushed for room when we are all in but i still require a very size-able bag. Tried the GM duplex wheelie but it was taking quickly back to the shop as i was then using morrant pads which would not fit and i found it was a touch small.

I currently have the Kookaburra PRO 1000 which is a decent size bag however im not a fan of the design and the quality aint great and has worn very very quickly, i just hate the flip lid type design and its a flimsy product which i cant stand so i decided a new bag was required so i bought the Puma iridium 5000 which will be on its way back to the shop first thing in the morning as its totally useless or i could use other words but its a public forum so i wont.

Surely there has to be a manufacture out there that can develop a top quality sizable but still compact bag which is quality made and ticks all the boxes for cricketers at all levels.

All I want in a bag is 90cm long I can fit bats in and rigid sides so it isn't all floppy!

i recently got an oldish albion centurion bag on ebay for £20 perfect condition, cos i needed a bigger bag, and it is flipping massive. the guy was selling it cos it was too big, its awesome with loads of room
probably not rigid enough for some though who may be a bit picky, but im chuffed with it

The ultimate bag for me would be as follows:
3 wheels
Retractable handle at opposite end to wheels (obviously!!)
Bat cave at base of the bag fitting 3 bats
2 tiers- top for all kit like pads, gloves etc.
Bottom tier for clothes
Deep pocket at each end, one for helmet, one for spikes
3 little pockets along one side for valuables
2 bigger pockets on the other side for balls or something like that
Dimensions something like this:
90-95cm long
40cm wide
35-40cm high

Oh and all for £40!

Surely, if we could agree a design (which in itself might be the main stumbling block) we can make this happen - between us we have the contacts to get a batch of bags made to spec

Good thread I must say :).

I had been using GM Original Limited Edition Duplex for a good amount of time, such as complete indoor season and more than dozen outdoor nets and last four games. Whilst it looks very gorgeous in pictures but I didn't like it as much as I liked it in pictures. The reason are/were;

 - Too big : On away games we use carpooling where we share rides and my bag is biggest, so it becomes inconvenient to carry the bag and for indoors its very big.
- Underpar Quality : Since it has hefty price tag, maybe I was expecting the bag to be of better quality perhaps? First of all, the compartments barrier is not strong enough, whilst I gave it less use, the barriers always ended up getting out of shape and I'd often put weight on it to flatten it. Furthermore, there were signs of rips. Again this seems to be norm, but these shouldn't have been there considering how I treated it. For half of the use I never let the wheel touch the ground.
- Futile Bat Compartments : This looked amazing innovation to me, but the foams were so tight that they would often damage the bats decal. I know its not a big deal but if labels are damaged then you can't really get them replaced unless you spend £30-£45 for refurbishment merely for decals!!
- No Pockets : This amused me really. The bag has absolutely no pocket(s)! Yes, it has three compartments but they aren't pockets. I didn't like throwing my keys and cellphones in compartments. So a small pocket would have been sufficient for me.

What I liked about the bag was that it allowed me good organization.

I got it for £69 so price was not as steep as it is usually for UK boys. I sold it on locally for £45 which I think is a decent price.

The bag currently in use for me is Millichamp & Hall Medium Canvas. I really like this bag, why? Following are justifications for me;

- Ideal Size : It is not one of those biggest bags in the market, it is very compact and decent size. Unlike GM I have no problem in carrying this on my shoulders. More importantly, it is very compact and easy to carry around.
- One Pocket : Unlike GM this bag has one pocket. Whilst many won't like it but it is a good one to throw your keys, cell phone, sun block et cetra

However, one slight downside is that, you can't place any bat within the bag. Carrying bat itself is not very inconvenient but I prefer having everything together so when I field I have an eye on my bag after every over.

I got this M&H bag in there clearance section so paid £35 (lol) which is awfully a bargain! So for that price, its remarkable.

This is what I carry in my bag ;

- 1 Pair of Pads
- 2 Pair of Gloves
- Ayrtek Helmet
- Shock Doctor
- Thigh and arm protection
- Some shirts, some base layers and clubs jacket for games.
- 1 Pair of shoes plus steel spikes

The dimensions of GM and M&H respectively are (cm) - l x h x w) ;

92 x 38 x 42 & 82 x 33 x 33

So that different is very significant for me.

Lately I have been like Salix Pod Pro, likes of Tim and Joe have that and they rate it extremely high. That bag dimensions are;

86 x 36 x 33

Once again very good thread.

I would like a stand up bag that stands up! I didn't have enough gear for the Ayrtek to work so down sized to the the salix pod one. The salix bag is smaller and again doesn't stand up. The bat pockets are pointless as I can't fit my bat into it, and the handles are a joke. There is no Velcro tie for the handle so they just flap about.

If anyone can recommend a stand up bag that actually stands up with minimal kit it I would appreciate it.

Our newer ones have panels that fit in the sides improve rididity so should stand up better even with less kit. Shipment due in end of the month

Will the bags be any smaller Tom?

I'm one of the forum oddballs who only takes one pair of pads and gloves!!

The only thing I would of changed with your bag would of been to move its feet nearer the end of the bag. I think that would of helped immensely.
At least with your bag the padded bat pockets are a great addition and nicely padded.

Wasn't Tushar trying to design something like this?  Although I reckon if we all put our ideas together we could design a CBF bag, then all it would take is for one of the forum sponsors to manufacture it!

Another idea might be to develop some form of adjustable divider for in bags - I'm quite happy with the size of my GM easi load wheelie but it's just one big space and that's a bit annoying, I'm sure others have the same issue too. Some firm of mesh pockets that could be glued or Velcro taped in place would also be a good way of adding pockets where needed.

I guess all of this would be able to do - however how much would you be willing to spend on 'the ultimate cricket bag' - If the option was there, would you get a custom made cricket bag for a premium cost?

I'd guess my ideal bag would have;

Large outer pocket for wet kit, towel, wash bag etc
Two outer pockets for balls, mallett and other accessories
Underneath padded bat pocket for 2/3 bats
End pockets one for spikes (prefably space for 2 pairs) and one for my lid
Large inner compartment for pads and gloves
Retractable handle
3 Wheels.

Ideally this wouldn't be huge so you can fit it in a car with other team mates kit etc
