ollie raynor? are you being serious. average doesnt quite cover it!

dont get me wrong JT is a good player but i dont think he is good enough. ive seen him bat a couple of times and wasnt stunned.  i havent really tracked his career but batting for leics against div 2 attack obviously flatters his stats a touch. reports early season were saying he was pretty average against the moving ball. remember either against somerset or possibly warks he was out caught behind trying to whip an outswinger into the midwicket stand. failed to realised it had been boomeranging outswingers all day! says to me he needs to be scoring rather than digging in. especially when your teams in trouble!

He has his chance but i think he will be found out against the SA attack. Morkel and steyn will give him a good working over. I hope for englands sake thats not the case but i guess time will tell.

He's not the only person that struggled early season, heck Compton was probably the ONLY person that didn't, and even the man himself was at a loss to explain it! Cook, Strauss, Bopara, Morgan got into England's side on the back of Div 2 performances, and the first 2 haven't disappointed. And he has scored runs this season, AND for the Lions side too. Also missed out for Leics, as he played for the side with possibly the worst attack in the division (save Claude Henderson, but he's a solid player of spin). I reckon he'll do well. Might not click in his first innings at test level, but then again most rarely do.

Aside from thinking that he is an excellent player, he's obviously been groomed into this position for a few years with the Lion's captaincy etc. He also had no real rival for the spot, Bairstow is out of favour and Compton has had one good season and needs to prove himself.

For what its worth I think Bairstow's problem with the short ball was exaggerated, the skiddy bouncers of Roach and Edwards would trouble most test batsmen, nevermind a novice
