its highly unlikely that the players would come out and admit the team has been weakened, they want to project a feeling of confidence and that the team will be fine without KP, hence maybe why they came out with the statements. It would be damaging and unprofessional of them to admit weaknesses, and they may aswell not bother turning up for the next test

Strauss did not come across as somebody desperate to invite Pietersen back into the fold in that press conference to be honest.
