as clear as mud - what I mean is, the design of the Flare is such that by common consensus it picks up like a railway sleeper, so it is not simply a case of the Icon being concaved making the big difference!

I agree with this. The Flare is horrible.

Theory goes that the more wood running down the line of the hands/handle the better. Putting wood towards the edges means weight is further "off centre" and the bat feels heavier than it should.
Which is fine, except that the Icon has decent sized edges and so the weight of the wood is further off centre than in a bat with thin edges... ???

which is true compared to a thin edged bat but the comparison here is to a Flare.

Surely the middle position is a deciding factor in how a bat picks up? I'm thinking about an Amplus here specifically, I couldn't believe how well they pick up for such a heavy bat?

Then again identical bats sometimes pickup differently....why's that?

Counterbalancing possibly?

different willow density and varying moisture content?

I was thinking that but if both bats are made to the same weight the lower density cleft would still be a little larger profile wise so they wouldn't be identical after all would they? Or would they? I don't know.........!

All I really know is that no two bats pickup the same whether they've come from a machine or not...a handmade bat is more explainable as there will be differences that may not be immediately obvious but a machine made one will always be the same........won't it?

Machine made? - Not necessarily - it's a natural material and the end product, or even the original cleft - and handle - would be weighed as a whole and maybe not checked to see where most of the weight is concentrated. Just as you can get bats with identical dimensions that will have different weights, you could get a cleft that has more 'weight' in one area than another. However, in respect of the handle material - cane - when using it for other purposes I've checked density via flotation. Some cane sinks, some floats, and weirdly - some sinks at one end and floats at the other, which suggests there is more weight concentrated at one end, even though the dimensions were the same along the piece. So maybe if the handle, by fluke, had cane that was slightly heavier at the top, you might get a very subtle counterbalance enhanced pick up?

What about the handle, if you get a flimsy handle won't it feel heavier? Sure this is the problem with my 2012 MH distinction.,.. Feels 3 or 4lbs heavy than the 2010 low middle version

Weight distribution would also come into play surely?

Its not necessary that the moisture content throughout the cleft will be same. Some clefts are more densed higher up the cleft (closer to the handle) so that means pickup would be lighter compared to one that has higher density lower down the cleft.

If that made any sense :S
