Favorite Opposition
« on: October 22, 2012, 09:44:03 PM »

Nothing on the search function on this so here goes - after we played against one of the better teams in our league this year and I saw us through to the target it got me thinking that I hadn't been dismissed by them for a few innings. Anyway further research into this (coaches and trains can be lonely places) has led me to be able to confirm that thought. Below are my scores in each year, the result and at which venue

2012 : H - 26*   W

2011 : A - 34*    L
            H - 21*   L

2010 : H - 16*   L

2009 : A - 28*   W
            H - 15*   W

2008 : H - 82*   L

And that is as far as my play cricket records go!

So I make that 222 runs in 7 games over 5 seasons (the missing games were rain offs)

I have had plenty of failures against lesser teams so this isn't an attempt to show off, it just got me thinking!

Does anyone else have a similar sequence against a particular opposition and would you say there are reasons for it or purely chance? I have a few thoughts about what contributes to my sequence but looking forward to hearing from other people

There could be a few factors in this, I find I bat much better and can trust the deck on covered pitches than those that are uncovered.
So I'll look to take more time 'getting in' on these pitches as once you are in, you normally only get your self out!

Other factors are if the other team is a bunch of idiots, I'll try and bore them to death by batting time or other distraction techniques.

Back in 2003, I started the league season with 53,51*,116*,42*,97*,68 - Average at one point stood at over 400 and even then the sole dismissal was a run out caused by my old man batting the other end. Couldn't last and ended up with 700 odd runs at a more modest 70. I had one team - royal ascot 3s who were sick of the sight of me. Scored 42*,76*, 68* over the course of 2 seasons No logic to it, all the matches happened at different times of the season and the make up of the oppo was different. Played one game in 95 degree heat on a dry deck and another on a damp green top, so the conditions were very different each time. One of their guys moved clubs to Bracknell 2s and played against me. I came in at 60-5, drove one down the ground, watched him walk over to the captain and have a chat. Next thing is the field spreads lol. Picked up 54* that day as well, think it was my only 50 of the season.

One local team I've never failed to get runs/wickets against them in 3 seasons of competition. Most notable scores being 100* and with the ball 8/16 (they only had 9 players, wished they had 11 that day!). Always manage to pick up 3 and 4 fors against them and score runs, they didn't/don't like me much!

One of the factors in my stats above are definitely the pitches, both my home ground and the oppositions are two of the best batting grounds in the county. Pace in the tracks but not tennis ball bounce, just so it comes on nicely. And both outfields are carpet-like, lightening quick with fairly short boundaries.

I would also say the bowling suits me - seamers trying to bowl fast and spinners trying to turn the ball. It gives you something to work with without having to manufacture shots. Put me on a slow track against something dibbly-dobbly and Im nowhere near so comfortable

I also think now it has become a mental thing. That most recent innings was the most comfortable I've felt for ages, I knew they weren't going to get me out, they could've bowled at me all weekend!

Don't really have a favourite opposition, but 3 of my 4 100s have been at home. Read into that what you want.

I was about to reply with "not unless you include games against Sunday crappers" but then thought about it a bit more and realised I do sorta have a favourite oppo - Wokingham.  Have played against evry side from their ones to tehir fours and always scored runs - reckon over nine years I can count two tons, six more scores over 80 and a further five fifties.  Only ever failed properly once, and only fell short of 50 three times.

Bugger of it is, I reckon they've still beaten us more than we've beaten them!

hate Wokingham, though I've always got runs there. Played 3 times there, first time we got stuffed though I did get 30 odd. Second time on a deck that was crumbling we scored 220 odd. We honestly had the game in the bag the way the pitch was falling apart it was so dry. It then rained at tea and turned the thing into a skiddy flat batting deck and we lost in 30 overs. Last time I played in a 2nd XI game I had to face some idiot overseas aussie bowling short from around the wicket in the dark. Saw him off for a draw but there captain was clueless in the art of prising out wickets.

i have played a team 4 times in the last 2 seasons .... 110* 143* 101 then 13 on a shocker of a wicket which they didnt prepare last game of the season and put water on it ... was a title decider to.

I really really hate them, full of young lads and a couple of old timers and everytime i play them they try to sledge the living daylights out of my for some reason, the more they do it the better i play. Needless to say i just tell them to keep serving up the best they have got which i keep telling them is very very poor.

Their new grounds are rather better, hence they've had a massive influx of players int eh last year.  Doesn't get away from the fact that they have a few, erm, less than pleasant characters mind!

I assume they sold up their town centre plot next to the railway line and used the proceeds for a brand new ground. Burnham and Slough did the same. 2 pitches by the pavilion always helps attract players. Means you if you end up in the 3s you won't get stuck on a playing field in the middle of nowhere.
