Heartwood is generally harder wood than the lighter wood.

Heartwood is the darker section of the middle of the tree where the sap has moved out towards the outer section. It makes no difference to the bat in itself but due to tighter grains being popular it is more commonly found now as the inside cut of a cleft will generally have more grains.

Does having heartwood on a bat affect the performance ?is it that red colour on the bat ?

It is the red colour.  Supposedly it is stronger/more durable, so is ideally suited to being on the outside edge of a bat.

Actually I think heartwood is more brittle, not harder. So it should be on the least used edge if that makes sense.

Pretty sure thats the opposite of what most bat makers say. Heartwood I have been led to believe should be on your outside edge due to its hardness.
