A big brand
« on: June 11, 2008, 06:24:14 PM »

DO people consider Newbery a big brand? I would but thinking about it i've never really seen anyone really use them at my club or seen internationals use them. However they are always a brand you hear about.

I would, all major shops stock them. They sponsor a number of players and produce a large number of bats (in comparison to a company such as Redback or Fusion)

I have a Mjolnir and I would say it was without a doubt my best bat EVER. I rate newbery very highly and would say there are one of the major brands.

I would definitely consider them a big brand! All the biggest cricket stores stock their products and I think they make brilliant bats

I think what they have done is brilliant!  They have been able to keep the hand-made aspect whilst churning out bats at nearly the same rate as the "big" companies.  I would call them a big brand.

I'd be suprised if they were anymore hand-made than GN, I remember being told by a guy that visited the factory that there's a machine they bought from Slaz there. How true it is I dunno, but I find it unlikely the can churn out the numbers they do without other means.

Yeah, I suppose that will be the case, as I said I thought it was brilliant they could keep production up like that, obviously its too good to be true...

Is it true that you can get a custom made newbery for something like £220 when a top of the range bat is more than that? Not sure if it's true but it's just something that i've heard.

Well if you visit Hove (the factory shop) you can get some deals on kit, usually more room to negotiate too. Not sure on exact prices though.

I'm sure you can get pretty much whatever you want, but when they have the vast selection of bats that they do, if you still can't find what you want then there's a problem.

Tom is right, they are great people down there, will help you out with whatever.

Great company - The bats have always been brillaint and this year with the addition of the SPS softgoods range i would honestlly say they are my favourite allround Brand !

As if things couldn't get any better there is now the GRIZZLY RANGE.

i would consider them a big brand, i have a lot of Newbery gear and i rate it higher than anything ellse ive had. i live in sussex where they are made and so a lot of club players use them, probably more than in other parts of the country, which may be why you have not seen many club players using them

First how does one define a "big brand"?

If it's purely on the basis of sales, then it's definitely not Newberry (and none of the other big names from the UK). If measured on marketing and publicity then again Newbery is not the one (as no one outside the UK has heard of Newbery. GM, Kookaburra , Woodworm, Puma and GN score here).

I would say for me a a "big brand" is one which can offer a balanced mix of quality and money and one on which I can place my trust to perform up to my expectations. These are exactly the parameters that Newbery is unbeatable on.

Till recently Newbery has been innovating within the ethical parameters of cricket. They were probably one of the later ones to come out with carbon handles and that to only for the UZI and one other profile. Gray Nicolls has spoilt the sport by introducing Titanium and Carbon handles. I am yet to come across a professional player who uses these so called revolutionary handles.

For me Newbery is at the epitome of bat making.

If you want fancy labels these can purchased and put on any bat.

It's the bats performance (and also how well it is used) that is noted.

So do not spend money on buying big marketed brands. Many of them don't even make their own bats (Kookaburra, Woodworm, Puma are just examples).
