Lovely lovely looking bats Paul. Why does this always happen when I decide to try not buying so many bats... :(

Some beautiful looking bats. I'm loving the Aldred Vintage and looking forward to someone doing a review on it. Although the toe does look a bit fragile. I know it's not where you're supposed to hit the ball :)

For future record do you offer a Lamitoe on your range, or has this not been an issue in the past with similar profiles?

I always find the statement"the toe looks a bit fragile" quite interesting. I've had a few older bats with toes no different in size to what we see now, and they've never had a problem. I'd suggest that the batmaker has designed the bat to stay in one piece if a yorker is dug out. At most non ECB Prem levels of cricket the ball won't be travelling fast enough to really cause you that kind of concern.

Woodworm torch of old(hunts) was notorious for toe breakage!

Hi guys thanks for your nice comments. Only had about 3-4 toes go over the last few years. It's a tough one though I must admit because there are so many cheap balls around now that are like concrete. The vintage toe is the same thickness as my old chase bats that I was sponsored with as a player 25mm and I still have a couple of those knocking around. I do warn people now though that it doesn't tend to be matches that break the toe very often though of course it does happen but nets. You will get some idiot run in with a lump of concrete in his hand wrapped in leather that cost £1.99 from toys r us. You can't controll that very easily. The way you play Yorkers is also a knack, you will see many professionals just drop a bat on them instead of trying to nail them. So this takes out the sting. You see many club players digging the ball out hard which does put the wood under extra stress especially when combined with batting on a artificial surface with a concrete base.
I haven't looked at the lamitoe simply because you can't use them in 1st class cricket and I never came across it as a problem when I was playing but seeing as club balls are getting harder, as indeed are the county balls it may be something I will look in to
  Thanks guy

Sorry guys also meant to say that it's also very important to knock the toe in properly. As its the most vulnerable part of the bat it needs extra attention but people tend to forget it because it doesn't feel good when you hit it with a mallet so we just move onto the bit that feels nice the middle. Sound familiar anyone?

Great info on yorkers here Paul.thank you for the info.
Youre spot on,league balls(middlesex and beyond) are a certain standard, sunday games and nets you see all sorts of hard centered balls a bit like hockey that tend to come from india or pakistan.these are the ones that damage the bats.
Trying to drive yorkers is common in our games ive seen the pros just kind of glide them offside which i think is what you mean.
Thanks for posting the above

Personally I wouldn't really recommend lamitoes, i had one on a custom made choice willow bat, which cracked completely through the toe and the lamitoe. I was able to repair it but i don't think it gave any more or less protection than without it. I believe the theory behind them is that they create like a plywood sandwhich where only the top layer gets damaged and make it easier to repair, but as i said it cracked completely through.

I disagree pikey this saved my bat many a time yes they crack but take a look at this you see the damage it caused but without it the whole bottom edge would have come off

I know some people like lamitoe and others don't. I always try and get people to think of their bat as a tool of the trade not a toy because you really need to look after it to get the best from it and for it to perform its best for you. Lots of people don't think that way I am afraid, its just a sign of our throw away society. If you were a joiner you wouldn't use your most expensive set of chisels to strip out old nail strewn timber you would be sensible and use old chisels. Same with your bat why miss use your best bat on cheap balls and concrete surfaces or like this last summer in sheer water logged conditions use your old one save your best. The pros don't abuse theirs and if they do the sponsors want to know why.
It may seem a bit old fashioned looking at it in this way but I have always had to look after kit as I couldn't afford not to as a young cricketer. I had someone bring a bat back to be cleaned up last season that was about 2 months old that was covered in mould. He had played in rain in the nets got sodden then all matches rained off for a month and lefty his wet kit in his bag for that period and wondered why it had happened. I feel gutted spending  £2-300  on something and abusing it what a shame.
Thanks guys for your continued interest
