So Chad, how would you rectify the problem? You're bang on with your assertions as far as I'm concerned but what would be the major thing you would suggest working on? What would you be looking for when stepping towards the ball? Seems like you're pretty switched on with what you're looking for, and would make a good coach :)

Haha really? I have no idea with this kind of stuff, so I don't know if there is a correct approach. I do know that working on one thing at a time works best though, as it can get frustrating trying to sort everything out at once! The main thing in batting IMO is not giving away your wicket, so the thing I would work on is the follow through of the shot. I would aim to get the batsman not to walk out his crease, as this will lead to stumpings. How I would do this, I'm not entirely sure, but it does seem almost like a stumble into the 'kick', which suggests to me there's an issue with balance. I actually used to have a big problem with my back leg moving all over the place before and after the shot. I would get the batsman to do a drill in his own spare time, as this is what I did to help with my balance. I would visualise balls pitching in various lines of a full length, and take a step out towards the ball, ensuring  I was leading with my head, landing on my heel and rocking onto my toes, trying to keep my back leg/foot as stationary as possible. Start with defensive shots then move onto check drives. Of course, you need to move your back foot, but the main aim of this drill was not to fall out of balance.

I could be horribly wrong, but found this helped myself with my problems! Then I would see if it helped at all then moved on from there. 8)

  • Clear your mind, stay still and watch the ball

If I was working with this player, i would start with grip stance and set up - work on that really hard for the first session and then look to getting the eyes (somepeople say head, I believe eyes as you watch the ball with them) moving inline to the ball and looking to get everything else to fall into place at that point.

the first part would be encouraging the player to stay still and balanced. It is much easier to see a moving ball if the eyes are still. The second part would be about the "topple". I would try to keep everything as simple as possible.

Realistically I would use a load of old tennis balls and a training bat if possible and work on the player's top hand most of all.

We'll go down again soon I expect, and if Spielberg's still willing to record me I'll post it on here again.

Found the right thread now.

just out of interest. I am currently watching the recording of todays SA vs NZ test.. McCullum does the right foot thing like the OP does. I'd not seen it before and hadn't noticed McCullum doing it till today either. Pointless post I know but thought I'd share.

:)

Not all the time but he' done it 4 or 5 times so far.
