Need a lightweight, non-bulky pair of pads.
« on: January 06, 2013, 04:04:15 AM »

Hi,

I'm a 14 year old from Melbourne, Australia. I need a new pair of pads, but I have a somewhat specific requirement. My knees, (due to bad form), fall inwards when I run, and that is enough to ruin my running between wickets. So, what I need is a pair of pads that aren't bulky around the knee roll, and are lightweight. So far, I've found Aero P2's and GN A61 750i's. Are there any other pads like this?

Thanks

Hey mate, I can't offer you anything in the pads side of things... What I would recommend you do is see a podiatrist/chiropodist, as it sounds like you may have a problem with your running/walking if your knees are collapsing.

Sorry I can't really help you with regards to pads! I have very limited knowledge, but I know that Gray Nicolls Legends pads are highly rated by Cover Drive here, who really knows his gear. 8) I think they are lightweight and traditional looking, so aren't bulky at all. :) Also depends what height you are as well!

It's not a major problem, it's just over pronation. But it's enough for the knee rolls to occasionally hit each other and for me to fall over. Plus, I'd like them to be less bulky at the knee roll so that I can run naturally.

Oh, I'm 5 foot 3, and I can't really afford Legends, the budget is about $100, up to $110 if it's really worth it.

Also, just so that people have measurements so that we can narrow it down:

Ankle bone to knee - 40cm

Current pads - Puma Calibre 3000 Boys RH

Ah right, fair enough. Do be cautious of this though, as it can lead to damage in the knees over a long term. As long as it's only temporary, then all should be good. 8) Yeah, probably best not to spend too much, as you will be growing pretty rapidly soon I reckon, and will need to buy mens sized pads! :P

I find Kook to have pads that are way too bulky, those things are madness. In terms of a slim design I normally look at Puma's, they normally wrap around best. I use a pair of Ballistic 5000's Small Mens from a couple of years back, and they fit really well.

The latest top of the line Puma pads across the range are extremely lightweight. I was looking at a pair when I bought some new pads about a year ago, but I didn't go with them because they weren't the comfiest. My advice would be to try them out and see how they compare to what you've previously used.

I use Puma 6000's currently.  They are very narrow at the knee, but quite long in height.

Hello,

I would suggest using Aero P3's size "S" the later versions with the molded fronts and knee roll are better to be honest. Measure the distance from the top of your foot to the middle of your knee and you can check the sizes on the Aero website. My lad is now 5ft 7 but used these until last season, they are a quite a narrow pad and very very light. I think they cost around £35.00 but that was the price a couple of years ago when they were purchased.

Cheers

Daaanal, apologies for delay in responding here.

Anyways, I would recommend you mid-rang pads because they tend to have less of padding, fewer material is being used so due to that they will feel less bulky for you and will be lighter.

I have always found Gray Nicolls pads to have best wrap around the knee region, so whichever mid-range (have no clue how Aussie range works) you like go with that. If you want top tier ones then I can not recommend Legend ones enough.

Puma aren't bad either, there Iridium 4000 would be good IMHO.

Whilst Morrant International are lightest but they are quite bulky around knee region (well I found them to be at least)

If you have anymore question(s) feel free to ask.

I LOVE the look of the VKS pads, and they seem to wrap around quite well, while being fairly lightweight, but I can't find them in Australia.

It seems as though the Gray Nicolls A61 750i foam should be good as well, it seems good.

Also, Aero P3/P2s aren't out of the question, they seem the lightest, and they seem to wrap around the best, but I'm unsure about the comfort and protection at this stage.

With the Puma range, despite me having used Puma softs A LOT during my short cricketing career, thee is no pad in their 2013 range that suits me. I like my pads to look a little different to everyone else's, and the only stuff that Puma seem to have in my size is the entry level pads, and I need something a fair way beyond entry level, under 11s stuff.

By the way, considering that I can't seem to do so, can anyone find the 1000LE range by Gray Nicolls in a Youths or Small Mens size? I'm 40 cm from the ankle bone to the knee roll, so I could be anything from a Boys / Youths or Small Mens, depending on the pad.

So, in other words, are there any pads in the Gray Nicolls 1000LE range that are 39 / 40 cm from the instep to the knee roll.

So now, in short, the pads up for consideration:

- Gray Nicolls 1000LE range (Anything that is 38 - 40 cm from the instep to the knee roll)
- Aero P2/P3s (Small)
- Gray Nicolls Powerbow 750i (Youths)

I'd like for them to have padded buckles and straps, but if everything else I've mentioned comes first.

By the way, I've asked my dad for a bit extra on the budget, and I can go up to about $145.

1000LE straps will have foaming/padding which is quite remarkable.

That's why I'd love to get an 1000LE pair of pads. But, they're not available in my size. If anyone can find a pair of 1000LE pads, from this year or last year, in Youths, please tell me.
