Agree re; Ian Bell - similar style of player to VVS, who is worshipped as one of the modern greats - Bell has better stats.
Stats aren't the be all and end all of how a player is rated.

VVS Laxman goes down as a great due to his domination of the legendary Australian side.

He has got the 100s others have as batting at 6, after Sehwag Tendulkar and Dravidian are done there's not much point in batting on.

Also regarding Laxman, until the tours of England 2011 and Australia 2011-12, he was averaging 47-48. As he was passed his best for the tours I named above and his averaged declined to 45.

Laxman is considerably better than Bell.

Graeme Smith is pretty underrated. He averages 49 with 26 centuries but is never mentioned as a great opener.

He's more known for his captaincy.

Gonna throw Rob Key into the mix, great captain, excellent bat and a test double hundred should have played a lot more for England IMO

Jacques Kallis has to be the most underrated player.

The best allround cricketer ever. Batting average above 50 over such a long period. Bowls 90mph on his day and has bags of test wickets. One of the top 5 slip fielders of all time.

Plays all 3 forms of the game and excels in all of them with bat and ball.

Yet people still seem to forget all this when they talk of the greats of the game.

I think Alex Hales is extremely underrated by the England selection, how he hasn't earned a place in the ODI squad ahead of Bell I do not know.

Otherwise I think Kallis is a terrific ambassador of the game but is rarely talked about ahead of Tendulkar and Ponting. All three would be the greatest players across the last decade for sure, but Kallis receives little recognition for it.

I don't think Chaminda Vaas ever got the recognition he deserved.

Absolutely agree, the man has the 11th highest test match average of all time, and the highest of anyone in the modern era, over a period of nearly twice as long as anyone above him (160 tests, nearest to that is 93) which shows excellence over such a long career, longevity which includes a career bowling (admitedly less so as of late) whereas all above are batsmen.

44 hundreds, 2nd most of all time. The only flaw is that he never made a triple ton, but neither did some lads called Tendulkar or Ponting. 4th most runs of all time (probably be second by the time he finishes). 6th in ODI's.

Add in that he is SA's 5th highest wicket taker in tests, 3rd in ODI's, the man is the greatest all rounder of the modern era, if not all time.

He even has an ipl contract, excellence over all forms!
