Changing from right to left side stance
« on: January 25, 2013, 07:14:13 PM »

Hi all, So many of our top international players are right handed (throw, bowl etc) but face up left handed. Also the Michael Hussey story of idolising Alan Border & changing to a lefty got me thinking, has anyone else gone from batting as a right hander to a lefty? Has anyone had a serious crack at trying it?

There's a guy I used to play my junior cricket with years a go. He bowled and batted left handed but his dominant hand was his bottom hand due to medical conditions, he changed to right handed and wasn't bad. I always thought he was better left handed but he wasn't far behind.

My mate bowls, writes, throws etc right handed, bats left handed.

His 3 older brothers bowl, throw etc left handed but bat right handed...

Mark butcher switched to leftie as a kid so he could spank his brother out of the garden when they were growing up.

I do that. Always felt natural, but batting/playing golf left handed doesn't feel as weird as I expected it to. Might give it a crack sometime!

There was a guy at our club who's right hand was dominant (writing etc...) yet his uncle taught him to bowl with his left arm and batted right handed. Needless to say he had very little (if that) control whilst bowling!

Oops sorry Johnny, was supposed to quote Jake's post! I write left-handed and bowl left-handed, yet bat right-handed, and my right arm is stronger. It's all a little weird!

Lefties are so much more elegant than right handers, if I have a son, I think I'll teach him to be a lefty

I've thought about it as my right arm is stronger than my left so I'd expect that I'd have more control, but then it begs the question about which eye is dominant. Suppose I could give it a try sometime.

My brother bowls and throws left handed, bats and writes right handed. It's a strange thing, but because of it he isn't hugely bottom handed when batting, which I guess is a good thing. :P

Yep I'm the exact same, do everything right handed (Bat, write, golf, kick right-footed etc) but bowl and throw with my left. And yes, I've tried bowling with my right at practice - terrible! I've been told I used to play golf left handed as a wee tacker and changed to right at the age of 5/6 and now feels completely unnatural left handed.
