Foot movement
« on: February 01, 2013, 11:38:36 PM »

Having had a few nets so far this season, I've found I've really struggled with my footwork. 2 main problems.

Firstly is getting  a good stride in on the front foot, struggling to get my weight into shots and thus I find my self hitting a lot of drives with my weight back into the air as a result.

Secondly is when i play of the front foot, I don't seem to be able to make the adjustment for line. As in I put a half stride in and my feet (as well as not getting forward) stay still and don't either come across to the ball if its outside off or do not open up for the legside ball.

This is really frustrating me, so any advice or drills on overcoming this would be greatly appreciated. Sadly I have no footage and will not be netting again for 2 weeks due to a wedding.

Thanks

Matt

Hey Matt, I think we all struggle with this in the first few nets back! I think that maybe you could work on playing shadow shots, trying to get your head right over the imaginary ball. I would start with defensive shots, and try keep the pose, encouraging better balance. Even go as far as over-exaggerating a stride, and trying to keep balance then, and also do lots of stretching. I feel that everything works much better if you have had a good stretch! I think I get told to try almost 'fall' into my shots, leading with my head. Where your head goes, you will feel your legs almost instinctively follow.

I know it isn't much advice, but I hope this helps!
