Which Brand?
« on: February 04, 2013, 10:33:09 PM »

Just thought i would do a quick thread to see people's opinions.  Dont really need to mention why just pick first your favourite from each pair. I know you may not have used each brand so just go with the gut feeling.

Just done 5 pairs to keep it simple.

Gray Nicolls vs Gunn & Moore

Salix vs Newbery

Scat vs Laver

H4L vs Willostix

Hunts County vs Kookaburra

Go on there here is my worthless opinion.
GM - even though I would love a scoop.
Salix - the sorts top.it.
Scat - prefer the sticker design.
H4L - none contest
Hunts - childhood affection to it.

Some of these are really tough but I'll go:

Gray Nicolls
2 best bats I've owned were a salix pod and newbery uzi. Difficult to split as love both, but giving it to salix as their softs win it for me.

Laver but not used either

Have a willostix stick as current match bat, but have H4L 666 for this season. Not used it yet so will have to give a draw for this one.

kookaburra only as hunts county not what they were

Gray Nicolls - just class

Salix - Andrew had the good grace to call me personally and discuss the potential of us stocking Salix in the future. Newbery never replied to our enquiries. I also resent the way Newbery seem to be immune to the stick that GM receive for making bats with a CNC.

Scat vs Laver - Would love a bat made by Julian. I've only recently acquired a L&W. I'm not really in a position to comment on either brand yet. draw

H4L - Never seen any H4L gear in the flesh. Had a number of issues with Willostix though, so H4L wins.

Hunts County vs Kookaburra - Toughie, they are the closest brands geographically to us. Hunts was the brand of my youth but is on the wane as a brand. They are flourishing behind the scenes though, making bats for no end of smaller upstarts, i saw Sabre and Gecko when i was there last, but there's always a new brand every time i visit. Kooks is a brand ive never really used much, and i am not a big fan of the garish in your face decals of recent years. However, the Kahuna gear is just classic. Draw.

1. Too close to call - so draw!
2. Salix pips it due to impressive finishing
3. Three years ago, would have been Scat! But JM health has made me say Laver now
4. H4L are just too good!
5. Kookaburra

One question I'd like to know before casting a vote is did JM always source his part makes from India or did he used to press and handle his clefts himself? I read somewhere he used to travel overseas to press his clefts although not even sure if that is true.
