Realising how unfit you actually are.
« on: February 08, 2013, 05:22:15 PM »

Today I decided to get out on the bike and do some miles as it seemed nice. I haven't done anything cardio wise for a while now. Now I know I'm unfit/over weight and I've been threatening to do something about it for a while, but realising just how bad it's got is very scary!

Has anyone else done something like this? Realised just how unfit you are and it's a real scare?

what'll scare you more as you get older is how quickly you lose fitness when you don't keep up the training - I go to the gym 4-5 times a week now, but even a couple of weeks off and it feels like I'm back at square one!

Definitely going to keep at it now. After thinking to myself 'it can't be that bad' for the past few months. The trusty road bikes going to be getting a battering from now on. If you don't use it you lose it my teacher at school used to say lol.

I have had this at the start of every cricket season for the past 3 years haha! In the first match 2 seasons ago, I bowled 15 overs, and could barely bat as my legs was cramping up. Was a little disappointing, but taking 5 for 45 off 15, with a triple wicket maiden, I couldn't really complain about what I managed to do with the ball. ;)

You should do Insanity and draw up a blog like myself! I have to update it, but have been a little busy recently! :-[

Mate it'd probably take me the same. I did around 13/14 miles on the road bike, was sick once lol. I can barely walk now! Feel like I've done a marathon or something.

you will be fine - gradually take a week to build it back.
Its just a feeling - keep a log of what you do - you can compare that over time to see - if you are training properly you won't loose it that fast.

I use a few supplements to give me a bit of a helping hand.

Alpha Men Super vitamins
ZMA - for recovery
Glucosamine
Omega 3

I'm also 41 and have had 13 major ops with a decent number of screws holding my upright.

These type of supplements will help you train and recover. I also use skins, wouldn't train or play without them.

A great way to get cricket fit is get a decent rucksack, stick 10 kilo's in it and walk fairly fast on a slight incline on the treadmill. You get the core stability from the light weight, slight resistance on the walking from the incline, lots of reps, and it's not going to kill you.

I can say that as I've just got back from the gym. Knackered and seeking a cold beer......

I've never been that fit but I'm especially bad now. Not too overweight but just very unfit, like Simmy I can't run to save my life. I used to be ok when I was younger as I played loads of cricket and worked 6 days a week as a postman during summer breaks from uni (15 miles walking a day helps keep you fit). It's no coincidence that when I was fitter my bowling was a lot better, it's pretty dire now.

I've got a dog so I walk him every day and I've started waking to work most days, it's about 3.5 miles and takes 55 mins so must be better than nothing. I'd like to start running but I really don't like it. Ideally I'd like to get a rowing machine as its the only thing I enjoyed when I used to go to the gym so I'm keeping an eye out for a good deal.

What is the longest you guys can bat against bowling machine? Just trying to gauge my unfitness level..

A month ago I faced 40 overs and then bowled 10 overs.

Last week I faced 40 overs and then bowled 5 overs before I ended my session.

Same story here  :( . I was all talk towards the end of last season about how I am going to lose weight . As the current season approaches  nothing has changed. I smoke about 15 cigarettes a day which means I can't run a few metres without gasping for breath . I pay for the gym which I use about 6 - 12 times a month with no notable result . I am not massively over weight but terribly unfit and run like a duck  :D . Wish I didn't succumb to the peer pressure of smoking when I was a teenager . I am very much annoyed at myself without doing anything about it  >:( .
