Sorry if this has been asked before but I am curious about this.

We used to have someone playing for us who would cut his bats up before use! Well, cut the top of the handle off anyway.
What would be the benefit of doing this? He used to cut it off to where the twine started so it was about an inch and a quarter shorter. Any of you guy know what the purpose of doing that might be?

Looking back I wish I'd just asked him now...

My thought is that it gives consistency regarding where you grip the bat as there is not much space for manoeuvring hands around the handle .

I've had a few guys ask for super short handles recently, the most common reason is they grip low down with their hands close together and tell me the top part of the handle gets in the way when playing some shots

A lot of Australian cricketers with small hands get their bat makers to reduce the length of the handle.  Examples are Ed Cowan and David Warner.  More so, many of these players use youth sized gloves.  I have a SSH bat and often wonder if I need anything more.  Mind you I use youth gloves too

cut the top off to reduce weight, downside is it might effect the balance slightly. Good pickup and balance often comes from perversely having more wood further up the blade, so chopping wood off at one end isn't a wonderful idea.
