Did you really need to update your kit at the end of the season?
« on: February 21, 2013, 11:04:43 PM »

This is a question I have been asking myself.

My kit at the end of last season

Bats: Kook Recoil 700, Ayrtek Elite
Gloves: Ayrtek Elite
Pads: TLB

New Kit

Bats: Red Ink, Kook
Gloves: Kook R900
Pads: Kook R900

My Ayrtek Elite was my number 1 bat last year. Theres nothing wrong with it and £30 refurb would have been sufficient rather than buying a new bat
My Ayrtek gloves are the best I have ever used and are still in great condition, no need to buy the Kook's
My TLB pads are admittedly a little grubby, but nothing I can clean up. They are quality pads and will easily hold up for longer.

Sometimes its worrying the influence a forum like this can have on you. I didn't need new kit, but went for it anyway and now am struggling financially!

Those of you that have changed this year, did you need to?

My new kit for the season ahead is a Dynadrive, a B3 and a pair of SAF gloves. What will I likely use in my first match? Kit from last year and my bat that I spent £20 getting reshaped, as it all is comfy, works, and I like it!

At the end of 2012 I had:

Powerbow Strauss LE Bat
Bellingham and Smith Supreme Bat
Vitas Cricket Lion Roar Bat

Legend Pads
Powerbow Players Gloves
Quantum Elite Gloves
Aero P2's
Aero Box

Legend Keeping Gloves
Powerbow Players Keeping Pads

Masuri Ti Lid

Asics Gel Adv 4
Adidas Spiked Up Trainers

Various compression items inc some grubby skins ice tights and long sleeve top, our own vitas cricket compression tops and some other guff

GN Pro Performance Bag
GN Pro Performance Duffle

I have sold/given away/binned:

Both Pro Performance Bags
Powerbow Players Keeping Pads
Aero P2's
Asics Gel Adv 4's
Masuri Lid (2 years old and had been drop kicked over a pavilion in august after being stiffed LBW when I had smashed it! To say the shell had some cracking is an understatement)
Quantum Elite Gloves

I've made some additions for 2013, leaving me with a rather large amount of kit:

Powerbow Strauss LE Bat
Bellingham and Smith Supreme Bat
Laver and Wood Reserve Bat
Dynadrive Bat
Vitas Cricket Lion Roar Bat

Legend Pads (these are so comfortable after a year of bedding them in)
Legend Gloves
Powerbow Players Gloves
Vitas Cricket Pads and Gloves
Stretton Fox Inner and Outer Thigh Guards (to be ordered, but having met George this week, aero is out of my life forever except for the box and luggage)

2013 Legend Keeping Pads and Gloves
2012 Legend Keeping Gloves (kept as a backup)

Asics 200 Not Outs
Adidas Spiked Trainers

Masuri Elite Ti Keeping Lid
Ayrtek Blue Tint RAW with Black Ti Grille

All the compression stuff mentioned before, but I've added tights and a long sleeve top from a company called sub sports on eBay. Great gear at a good price.

Leaning Towards an Aero Stand up tour bag
Vitas Cricket Duffle bag to take to training

When it's all laid out like that in black and white it gets the heart pumping and my wallet runs for the border! In reality I only NEEDED:

1 New lid
Batting gloves
Keeping stuff

I went incredibly overboard with things that I wanted, rather than needing them.

I tend to use bats until they die, and I'm right in the middle of a cycle at the moment, so none have been retired recently, but the opportunity to own a Laver doesn't come up too often, combined with the Dynadrive's release means I've got probably 2 bats too many, but there we go.

I play 40-60 games a season, so things like batting and keeping gloves especially take an exceptional pounding, but everything else usually lasts much longer than people expect.

I also think you have to look at this objectively (in economic terms). I never bat higher than 7 for my Saturday team and the Sunday team only plays every other weekend. Last year I batted competitively 13 times. If I were to replace the stuff that wasn't in need of replacing then I could spend 300 quid on bat, pads, gloves and that would mean £25 extra per innings this year. Now even though I like to think I am the next Tendulkar, I just can't justify that extra cost in terms of extra runs/enjoyment this year.

I know it goes against the spirit of this forum but I have forced myself to only upgrade stuff that will make a significant difference so have gone for new Asics spikes and GN gloves (as the old ones were worn out) and will stick with my Slazenger V100 for another year. It doesn't stop me dreaming of getting the Affinity Carbine though :)

I only tend to buy kit if its a great bargain or if I'm in desperate need of something. While I curb my urge to spend big, it doesn't stop me buying top quality kit at cheap prices (New GM Epic 707 at £70 and used Kooka Kahuna RP's £25 for example). However, since spending time on this forum, my wishlist continues to grow :(

Of course I Don't need any new kit. In fact if I threw away one of my 5 pairs of Kook Kahuna 1000 gloves that are warn out due to netting so much I'd still have 4 left so I've got plenty. Same with the rest of my kit that's new in 2012. However, I like having new kit and as someone else said.. what else would I do with the money.. Buy a new flasher car and waste it on tax and fuel?? Maybe waste it on some beach somewhere getting fatter?? Or maybe put it towards a never ending mortgage just so it gets paid off 3 years or so earlier.. Nah sod that, I'd rather spend it on something I find enjoyable. Some people like flash big cars, others like holidays or flash houses.. I couldn't give a crap about them so my money goes on kit and other hobbies.

For once, yes! My main bat (and spare) both have rather large cracks in them (to the point where I reckon if I get another yorker they'd break!), and my softs are pretty grim (don't wear inners, so my gloves are horrible) and my bag has ripped, and the deal Andy at SAF had on meant I essentially got a free pair of pads (and then some) if I bought bat/gloves/pads/duffle/batsleeve, so I did...!

there was no need for me to buy anything... but the bargains were too tempting!

It's quite obvious Liam - last years kkit did not make me good enough, or get me to the fringes of the England team at 41 or make chicks dig me -

THEREFORE, OBVIOUSLY I NEED ALL NEW KIT TO MAKE ME BETTER, MORE SUCESSFUL AND MORE ATTRACTIVE TO GIRLS!

I second this with my new kit I'll easily score 1000 runs by the end of May!
