What are you working on in nets?
« on: March 01, 2013, 10:28:00 PM »

I'm guessing that most of us club cricketers are back in pre season indoor nets. If you are like me, no matter what stage you are in your are at in your cricket career you are looking to improve at something.
So what are you looking to get better at? My focus this year is to play straighter thought the leg side, so instead of hitting through square leg, I'm trying to hit more through straight mid wicket.
With my bowling (as a part time off spinner) I'm trying to get higher with my action to create more over spin as apposed to side/under spin.

Im trying to get forward to the ball a bit more, especially to quicker balls on the stumps. And trying to keep from twisting my hands through my shots, so not to drag shots into the legside when Im trying to play straight

Getting close to the ball has been tricky lately

I too was twisting and flicking to leg, got me out 2 or  3 times last year. I have discovered the world of oval handles after about 20 years of playing. It is really helping me play a little straighter. Not sure how I have missed the oval handle for so long!!

Short stuff, quick, at my head.

That should have me well prepared for April on sopping wet wickets!

Were half way through our 8 week programme, we did singles this week where we bat in pairs and every ball we hit we have to scamper a run. Gets the heart rate going and is more realistic than hitting ball after ball.

Personally working on discipline and not trying to smash the cover off every ball...there apparently is such a thing as leaving the ball?!?

Resisting the temptation to use a different bat every net! Seriously, it does get ridiculous! So far, I have been good and used my Laver most of the time. 8)

In terms of technique, attacking the ball more. I have a relatively solid defensive technique, the problem is that I treat the bowlers with too much respect I have been told. When I go all out attacking, I lose my form, so I guess working on trying to attack more regularly, and slightly earlier in the net, maybe after about 4 balls, I start playing slightly firmer drives. :)

Hmmm... I take it you normally get natural outswing then Tush? I used to get inswing all the time, and then I found that I could swing the ball out by changing the seam and the way my arm came round, and could bowl both as a stock delivery, but just didn't get consistent swing. (Sometimes I swung balls from middle stump to off the pitch!) Now I have changed my action, and found much more control in my swing coupled with more pace. At least that's what I have found in the nets!

Yes, they are kind of like a scuff sheet and mark where you hit the ball
