Newbery Bat – Shoulder markings
« on: March 18, 2013, 03:26:22 PM »

As I understand it, year of manufacture can be gauged from the marking on the shoulder of newbery bats. But how would I tell what year the markings relate to?

If you search this has been mentioned before, Pete is normally a good source to the answer.

From memory I think that A stamp was 2006, B in 2007, etc. Therefore G was 2012 and this year should be H?

Surely that can't be right. I have a Slazenger V360 stamped A and a Kook Rogue stamped E which would make them 2006 and 2010 respectively. Only got the Rogue at the end of last season and the V360 the previous one, which wasn't available until 2011. Is it not possible that it could be a mark for either the maker or region they are made?

These year markings I was talking about were for Newbery bats - not Slaz.  :)

Yeah now I read this back I get you. I wonder why manufacturers do it though? I do like having the A on the Slaz, it is a lovely looking bat (12 straight grains) so I guess it might be grading. The Kook is OK but only has 7 grains.

Manufactures put the stamp on the bat for a few reasons, the main one being so if it comes back they know the year etc it was made which would aid with returns and refurbs etc to offer the warranty etc. That is my understanding anyway.

Would also help the retailers know how long they've had a bat for

Oh ok. So do retailers keep bats for a certain period and if they don't sell they will send them back? Or will they just try and flog them really cheap online? It always amazes me how much stock some shops have. The nearest main dealer to me is Globe Sports in Bristol and at the moment they have loads of bats in but come the end of the season there are still tonnes there that won't be come the new season. I can't imagine a huge influx of customers over winter that will clear out a large shop like that!

Depends on weather they have the stock on sale and return basis or not. Some must just have to take a hit when seasons are as poor as last year weather wise hence some of the silly sales we benefit from. Some of the much larger retailers like Romida etc may also send the last seasons bats and just get new year stickers applied. Especially when profiles don't change much. Saw a Newbery GT in a well known cricket specialist and they had got it as 2013 stock but you could tell it was a 2012 GT that had had the Cadbury stickers applied and sent back out.
