Selecting a Cleft
« on: April 02, 2013, 10:50:29 AM »

Just out of interest, if you guys were offered your choice from the clefts pictured below, which would you go for, presuming density, cost etc were all the same, so just on looks, or how you think they'd perform?

EDIT -  not sure how to make the image larger, so you might need to do the zooming manually.

EDIT MK2 - fixed

Personally I wouldn't choose any as I don't like heartwood on my bats.

My general choice is made by seeing a cleft with 8-12 grains, nicely spaced out and a clean overal blade.

Second from the right, I was immediately drawn to.

I think if you've got a gut instinct so to speak when you first look at the pictures/clefts, go with that

I liked that one on first look too, the furthest left looks nice but is a bit too grain heavy for me. Don't think anything here will effect my decision, but always interested in what others think, especially on subjective matters.

Out of curiosity who is the maker that these clefts belong to?

Either the 1st from the left or 2nd from the right. I like straight evenly spaced grains.

I will rephrase the question then.

Which batmaker did the pictures originate from?

My original thought. How did you get them to give clefts to you?

I didn't, these are just the clefts selected by a shop who visited them.

I would find it enourmously hard to choose from that (actually any number!).

In that scenario I would almost certainly ask for the lightest and best performing cleft from the selection and leave it up to the bat maker.
