Fitting your gloves
« on: April 04, 2013, 10:32:58 PM »

Right well im new to keeping but I have two pairs of gloves (due to this forum making kit buying an adiction). One seems to be smaller than the other.

But what is the right feel that we look for in our gloves?

That is largely personal preference. I really like a close fitting, compact glove, this is why i loved the GN 2012 Legends.

I like to feel the ball and have flexibilty, this comes at a price, as there is less protection, arguably. But a decent set of inners and the correct technique should be enough.

Many people like to have a big meaty glove with lots of padding, to the point where they can barely feel the ball when they catch it.

Try them both out, and see which you prefer. Like so many things, there is no 'right' way.

I think I am basically trying to use this as an excuse for catching 2 out of 8 chances in tonight's nets. Only the second time ive tried to keep, but dam I am bad, seem to hit the palm and then hit the floor.

Think I may retire while I can move onto another sport.

It sounds like you may be coming up too early, so when you take the ball, your hands are coming from high to low. Meaning unless its a totally clean grab, you are effectively pushing the ball towards the ground.

If you try to stay as low as possible (i wait until the ball is passing over/past the stumps when stood back and just after it pitches when stood up) and take the ball on the rise then you'll find it easier.

Video of you keeping will help me more in this area though.

Thinking about it, I think I was coming up too early. Just frustrating as it was in the hands.

Well I will try and get a vid sorted, just feel stupid getting a camera out, as no one seems to do this at the club.

Thanks for the tips though, will try again next week.

Cheers
