How to increase bowling speed in Spin bowling ?
« on: April 13, 2013, 09:14:51 AM »

Hi Guys, I wanted to know that how can I increase my bowling speed ? Are they any drills or workouts ? I bowl off-spin but it comes rather slow so I get hit allot over my head for sixes,
so I want to learn how to bowl quick off-spin.

Bowling quick off spin for me was natural and slowing it down was the effort, so basically the opposite problem.
Try increasing the speed of your arm, bowl flatter rather than toss it up, and I found I I try to rip the ball more it comes out quicker (but that might e my dodgy bowling)
Hope this helped  :)

Are there any exercises to help you with your bowling speed ?

I'd say,  dumbbell lateral raises, dumbbell shoulder press, barbell upright row, lat pull down would be a good start. 4 sets of each, 6-10 reps

Our overseas player helped me out with this initially. Put some cones/markers on a good line and length in the nets, bowl normally at first and see how your accuracy is. Then speed up/slow down your bowling as required and aim for the same spot. Once you have the speed make the area smaller, start bowling as you would in different situations (left hander, end of the innings ect.)
Can do this alone but it's easier with a mate to keep/throw the balls back.   :)

As far as actual exercises go I've never really been into all that gym and fitness stuff (and it shows) but at a guess work on shoulders and upper body as Bruce said

Thanks for the help boys  :) I have one more question, how do you bowl the carom ball and get respectable pace in that delivery ? As I know you flick it out of the hand and it goes really slow to the batsman.

Never tried a carom ball, if I try to get one to go the other way I just bowl it out the back of my hand (if that makes any sense)

Not a leggy, I keep the same action but wrap my hand round so it comes out the back.
Bad pictures to go with my dodgy explanation

I have a ball where i push it from the front of the hand and it comes out like a leggy but just skids on, gets a few wickets if I get it right

Drills or workouts? The opposite, eat lots of pies lol. Most "dart" merchants are carrying a few pounds!. I'm a converted medium pacer so bowling it quickly comes a bit easier than slowing it down. With that in mind I would suggest taking a couple of extra steps and putting a bit more body into the delivery, as you would medium pace.

I bowl my leggies between 40-50mph. I think I have a pretty decent action for it but the key I find to the pace is the "explosion" at the crease, finishing off the action and a follow through. Much like pace bowling but altered. I only walk in a la Warne so it's not as if I have a run up.

You will bowl quicker as you get stronger. This normally comes with age (as a young kid of 14 I bowled proper loopy SLA stuff, now I'm 22 and a bit stronger I bowl a bit quicker as a result. for spinners, I'd suggest squats, chin ups, bench press, deadlifts, and then additionally anything that targets the shoulders. Don't try and force yourself to bowl quicker, as you will lose your shape/drift/dip/spin/etc...
