Cant score any runs!
« on: May 09, 2013, 10:53:46 AM »

So I'm opening batsman for my university but have barely scored a run this year and people are naturally getting on my back... no idea how to approach my next innings. After another disappointing 3 runs against Oxford, Contemplating just trying and teeing off, the steady approach clearly isn't working for me at the moment  ???

Someone must have some advice!

Are you getting out in similar ways mate? Or are they just good balls

How do you feel when going out to bat? What are you thinking about whilst putting your pads on, walking out etc?

Hmm I've played on twice and trying to defend and nicked off an absolute jaffa against Aberyswyth. Always getting out defending so may look to be more positive next week against UWIC

Just don't try to hit your way out of it either. Chances are you'll miss or not clear the field. But positive footwork and intent should help.

im in the same boat. scored 3, 2 and 1 so far in 3 knocks. first 2 i middled to a fielder. last 1 i played on via inside edge onto pads. a yard either way would have been 4.

write off the jaffa, it sounds like you would have nicked it with low scores or a run of decent scores. just go out there and dig in. it always gets worse when you think about things. just try and stay relaxed and play each ball on its merits. thinking about it just over complicates things. may also be worth looking at why you played on? maybe a straighter bat is needed? could you have left it?

If you get a good nut, that happens, the sooner you can accept that fact, the sooner your mind will be onto scoring runs in future!

Believe it or not the highly over-rated and not my fav cricketer Ravi "onhis9thlive" Bopara once said along the lines of - in cricket there are always good balls, what you make of your season is what you score in between them!

Firstly, form is a myth. If you were a good player last season, you are now. What is happening is you are thinking about it rather than dealing with the next ball. People get anxious and try to make things happen. You should do the opposite, relax, let the ball come to you and play straight. Take your time and it will come.

Haha that's probably the issue... I'm not a good player!

Go back to basics maybe? If you try going after the bowlers when you are not in a happy place then it's likely to end quickly!
I would tend to concentrate on the basic techniques and take each ball as it comes. Then runs should come back soon enough?

You need to get into a positive mind frame, you have scored runs before, and your the openng bat for a reason
If you think negative the result will be that.
