Why has my best shot now become my achillies heel?
« on: May 13, 2013, 11:15:25 AM »

When i was a young 17 year old fat boy standing at 5ft 7  a punchy backfoot cut infront of square used to be my best shot but over the years, without changing my technique, my performance of this shot has deteiorated to the effect its now one of my worst!   im using the same foot movement, same head position.

Why could this have changed? could it be due to growth? or mentally as it was my go to shot

you probably look to play it too much to balls that you should be playing a differnt shot to or leave.

difficult to say without watching a video to be honest

What's actually going wrong with the shot now? Are you skying the ball or edging it or what?

edging, mistiming, wrong position on the bat

I will latch onto about 1 in 4 just outside off stump.  Being a predominantly offside player it was a huge part of my armoury

As Buzz says without seeing you it's hard to say but could be taking your eye off the ball a bit just before you play the shot.

Practice.  Someone throwing down balls on your legs for 10 minutes in a net works wonders for me.  Stand tall, head up not falling to the off side and don't close the face too much.  Works for me  :-[

Biggest thing is head position. Wherever your head goes your body will follow. Stand straight and keep your head level. If the ball is travelling towards the leg stump then your head should be over it. Therefore you won't fall over and just chip the ball up or miss it.

Try fiddling with it, if you're getting a lot of leading edges you're probably closing the face too early and possibly a touch too early on the ball.  Better to play a touch later, not as hard, with more face of the bat than to get out to leading edges.

I too have this leading edges issue on leg side balls and also sometimes I miss them and hit on pads .

So now I take a leg stump guard to make sure the balls I miss will miss the stumps as well.

Regarding leading edges , I try not to play them too fine now ..I  just try to play them in front of the wicket on leg side.

Not the perfect solution  but it works as a quick fix until I get my technique right.

I'd go with that. I like to cut but the biggest danger is trying it to everything. Often have to tell myself to play straighter and punch it off the back foot or front foot cut it. Problem for us shorter guys is everything looks like it can be cut but not driven  ;)

on drives are fine as my strength is in the v and straight bat shots as 85% of my runs are scored there, cover, off and on drives  i would say 70% of my scoring shots are off side.  if i see a ball coming down the line of off stump, ive been known to creep outside leg stump and play it to off, i guess that shows my lack of confidence in leg side shots
