My Hammer Fyrre
« on: May 26, 2013, 08:49:55 PM »

I received my Hammer Fyrre bat from Paul last Thursday having pre-ordered it when I heard about the shipment coming in. I asked for Paul to knock it in having read good things about this service and despite him being very busy it only took a little over a week. Paul was also kind enough to let me use my discount code that I had originally planned to use on a Dynadrive but decided against it when he told me they were 2lb 9oz.
Anyway the Fyrre looks great, despite being 'performance' grade willow and I love the shape -the main reason I went for it. It is quite Laver and Wood-esque, and is similiar to a Special Reserve that I used a bit last season. It is a bit lighter though and with more wood lower down, which is why I got rid of the Laver (it did go really well though)!
The Fyrre has 6-7 straight grains and a few blemishes on the back, pretty clean face. Love the detail on the scuff sheet with the word Hammer repeated over and over and the actual shape of a Hammer coming up from the toe to the sweet spot of the bat. Just cosmetic I know but makes it a bit different. The scuff sheet has bubbled up a little on the edges but I think this is just due to the good job that Paul has done with the knocking in process. It feels bang on 2lb 8oz dead weight and now picks up a bit lighter having added another grip and a half. The handle was quite thin with one grip.
I have tapped it up with a mallet and it feels like it flies already. There is very little concaving, failry thick edges and a very high spine. I hope to use it in the nets this week and then perhaps in a game on Saturday. I can't wait to use it and will provide an update when I do. Many thanks to Paul and indeed to Jason at Hammer for producing it in the first place.

Hope it goes well for you mate. Not a huge fan of the rear stickers! But as long as it performs then happy days!

Thanks for the review, Andy.  I have very high expectations for this bat - the response off the mallet is just ridiculous! So, I hope it scores you plenty of runs this season!  :)

IQ, I presume you mean the face/back of the bat rather than the actual profile? If so then it must just be my camera work and funny angle because it is actually one of those bats that looks and feels wider than normal when in your actual stance. Whether that is to do with the stickers I don't know but some bats I have had definitely feel wider than others, and this is a wide one!

I think he meant the profile. Thin edges and spine is not that high either...could be just the pics

Oh right, well that's easier to answer. 34mm edges and 63mm spine. Not bad I reckon for 2lb 8oz. Don't actually think the profile looks too thin having looked at pics again but then I have the advantage of having seen the bat in the flesh so to speak. It is thin at the top but that is obviously the idea. Hope that answers the query either way anyway.
