concentration and patience while batting
« on: June 02, 2013, 06:14:33 PM »

hi guys,
i seem to lose my concentration and patience while batting quite quickly and end up giving my wicket away cheaply.
is there anyway i can stop trying to play stupid shots and just concentrate and play the ball how it should be played?
any tips would be helpful
thanks, Jack

Hi Jack

It is what works for you...

It is good that your self aware that you have this issue and this will help you sort it.

Take a guard, switch off off. The choices are yours. being on here and talking about chicket alot has helped me without doubt.

i always mark my guard and after every ball make sure i can still see it and mark it again, but if i defend for a bit i get so impatient and play a stupid shot and just give my wicket away

are you a naturally calm/patient person?
are you pretty fit or unfit?

in my experience if you are fitter you don't tire as easily and loose patience as soon.

trying to get yourself into a "bubble" is great but not so easy to do.

try some breathing exercises if you feel the red mist coming.

make sure you stay positive and don't beat yourself up.

Practice... I'm no coach (nor batsman!) but unless Nick/Buzz want to correct me, I don't think you can really "coach" patience. Surely it's just practice, it's something that comes with time and experience, being able to judge the shot? Instinct is a big part of cricket, and maybe you play these rash shots on instinct. Well, that's just my view anyway. Someone will no doubt shoot my argument to pieces though ;)

There is never really any quick fix. Hard work is normally the way to go about this!

I agree, it comes with form and confidence.

practice will help you gain that.

Write down every time you out playing a silly shot and what you could have done instead.

Maintain this journal and read it the night before your match. Very soon it will be ingrained in your thought process.

You may not stop playing silly shots altogether but at least it will stop you playing the same silly shot twice  :D
