Grains splitting
« on: June 17, 2013, 08:42:05 PM »

Okay this may sound strange but my mates bat has roughly 8 grains it pings decent but all of a sudden the grains are kind of splitting at the moment it's not majorly visible but you definitely feel the grains it's about 3 of them you can feel, he's not had the bat long just wondering if there's anything that can be done? He's used it half a season

If the splitting is down the grain there is nothing to worry a out its usuals a sign of a good bat however if the splitting is across the grain the. This will affect the bat in both cases is a good idea to fit a scuff sheet to the blade

Andyis correct.

A small crack running down the grain is also called "opening up". It's a sign it's knocked in properly.
Tony at Warsop always told me that "if the face falls-off, it's a good 'un". He is alluding to the vertical crack, I believe.

If the crack is horizontal it's not knocked in enough.

Horizontal isn't anything to worry about, either - as long as it is superficial. An 'opened up' bat may have a face resembling crazy paving.

If this appears to start on the toe is it still of no concern?
