Bat with a lowish sweet spot
« on: June 19, 2013, 09:01:39 PM »

I have been evaluating my shots lately and I do seem to be hitting a lot of balls nearer the toe area and so I think a bat with a longish low middle will suit me better. I also want something extremely light. Any thoughts on models like Salix Torque, Pod, Praestantia or M&H Original Low, Harlequin?

Is it easy to tell from the shape where the middle is?

thanks in advance.

Is a bat with too high a middle or is there not enough knee bend in your front foot strokes. Just a thought. When I find my drives are being toed I'll try and slightly widen my stance.

Just a thought

That's a very good point. Instead of blaming the tools, I should have thought of my stance, will try standing wider next time mate. My bats are fairly standard when it comes to profile, traditional medium sweet spot.

Just a suggestion. The other thing I get is driving before it's quite there. Probably a nerve thing - but it is difficult to get your timing from nets to slow low wickets.

One other thing, can you slide your hands up the handle an inch or so?

Apparently most of the pitches we play on don't get much bounce. So low middle would be good for us

as crictech recently said, pitches have very little influence on where you hit the ball, its to do with your technique, height, playstyle etc...

I've tapped up the Original Low recently and it's got a very long middle.
As have the Hattori and Tempo from H4L.

All worth a look.

Also bear in mind that the bottom heavy pickup will slow down your drive slightly which can be a very good thing as I found out that I was playing too early. I like the bending your knees more theory as its cheaper than buying a new bat.

Salix are quality bats. I am using a Wasp Performance that I got from Paul at IJC and it is a very good bat. Hard to beleive that it is a G2 bat.

Thanks Roco, I was more interested in the middle positions on various models.

This is quite true, we play on some very slow wickets up here, but you look at my bats, and the ball marks are all over what would be a mid-high sweetspot (on the edges mind you).  It's just the part of the blade that I get to the ball for some reason.  Try hitting some cross batted shots naturally and see where abouts on the bat you hit the ball, if you are still playing it low on the bat, then you're right to go after a low middle bat.

Every Ton bat I've ever seen had a mid-low middle, and they've all played well though none picked up light.

from looking at the impact sheets I've found only about 40% of people hit their cut shots from the same area of the bat that they hit their drives from

That is quite a good info.

Regarding the question, you can think about your batting style. If you are a finisher and have more role in swinging the bat, go for a low middle. If you are in a top order of your team, then working with a slightly high middle could be useful.

Or get some crictech sheets and work out where you actually hit the ball on the bat...
