Batting early in the innings
« on: June 29, 2013, 08:14:47 PM »

Hi all,

I have always had a major problem with my batting. Early In my innings I tend to reduce my foot movement, lack concentration and I am generally a bit sluggish. Against seam bowling attacks I am better but with spinners I usually throw my wicket away... Being bowled in most games.

Any suggestions to improve my game all experiences which I can learn from

Cheers.

I limit myself to playing only in V early on. Focus on basics I.e. Keep your head still and bat straight and don't try anything cute.

When I started opening, I limited myself to one shot.

One shot I was confident in my ability to play. If the ball was there I played it. If it wasn't it was defended or left.
I'd do this till I was seeing it like a balloon, then add more shots.

Bowled playing what shot?

If you are sweeping then you might want to put that away. With my limited ability I look to play with the spin, get your bat out in front of the pad to try and work it.
Difficult skill though.

Cheers for the replies.

I think the idea of playing straight is a great one and I will try that out.
I think it is mainly that I take time to get into batting mode from messing about on the sideline, I will try to get into the 'zone' before games now

Cheers again.

Nailed it buddy, need to get yourself switched on before you go in. Once I get two wickets away from batting I sit down and watch every ball to get as much info as possible, even if it means sitting by myself or with 1/2 other people. Don't be tempted in to messing about, easy as it is.
Also, as you say yourself play as straight as you can when you first go in. Full face of the bat, low risk shots. Even if it takes a few balls to get going you will soon catch up with the scoring rate.
Hope this helps
